Till 1974-75, when Rajesh Khanna’s movies began losing their appeal (for me at least), I was happy to watch any Rajesh movie for him alone. There was almost always at least one good song to enjoy in the movie. And very often more than one.

“Ek Shrimaan Ek Shrimati” (1969) is a movie that has so many fantastic songs in it that I wonder why this movie is not all that well known. Considering how songs played major parts in the success of movies, this movie should have gone on to become a major hit on the basis of its music alone.

In Hindi movies, we often have hero teasing the girl and the girl, after initial resentment falls for the guy, which to my mind is not really how it happens in real life.

Rajendra Kumar during his heydays was a big star and he was in fact nicknamed “Jubilee” Kumar because his movies tended to be hits. It was an open secret that he aped Dilip Kumar’s acting style and mannerisms. Someone apeing the best and going on to have huge success is nothing new and we see it in so many fields of activities.

In Hindi movies, boy and girl cannot get introduced in a nice and gentle manner. Their initial encounter must be abrasive, with the boy making passing at the girl and the girl not liking it a bit. A teasing song would follow, and somehow, by the end of the song, the girl would melt and begin responding to the advances.

In Bollywood movies of 1950s and 1960s, we had “teasing” songs where the hero would tease the heroine, often too nastily in my view and get away with it, unlike how it is in real life in India, where “eve-teasing” is a serious offence.

Here is a teasing song that is a beach song as well where boys (Dev Anand, Johny Walker) and girls (Vyjyanti Mala etc) are assembled at a beach. The first commandment of Bollywood movies is- “Though shall sing.” So a song ensues in which Dev Saab, all of 44 years, acts like a teenager teasing a 30 plus Vaijyanti Mala who is herself dressed like a teenager in a figure hugging tight dress. Johny Walker gives able company to the hero, as do other extras.

Hindi Films in the early 1970s could be clearly divided into two categories : “Rajesh Khanna” films and “Others”.
Such was Rajesh Khanna’s domination that unless you were a name already (like Dharmendra, Shashi Kapoor or Sanjeev Kumar), it was tough for another hero to compete with the Rajesh wave. Ageing heroes like Rajendra Kumar and Biswajeet began getting rejected, aspiring heroes like Rakesh Pandey and Romesh Sharma began getting dejected. You needed tremendous staying power, patience and a lot of luck to ride through those times. Ask Amitabh Bachchan who had a string of flops till Dame Luck smiled on him, with the lead role in Zanjeer falling into his lap with Dev Anand rejecting it.
