Today’s song is from the 86 year old film Brahmachari-1938.

The film was made by master Vinayak under the banner of his own short-lived film company “Huns Pictures”. During its existence of only 4 years, the company had given 10 memorable films. Though Vinayak’s films had a lot of demand, he had to close the company due to financial miscalculations which led to its being sold.

Today’s song is from the film jailor-1938.

The film was made by Minerva Movietone. It was directed by Sohrab Modi. Music was by Meer Saheb and all the 11 songs of the film were written by a young, ambitious poet Ameer Haider Kamaal Amrohavi – who later on became Kamaal Amrohi, a director and husband of Meena Kumari. The cast of the film was Sohrab Modi, Leela CXhitnis, Sadiq Ali (who was known as ‘The Prince of Minerva), Eruch Tarapore ( a relative of Sohrab Modi, who worked only in his films and also sang), Sheela, Sharifa, Kusum Deshpande etc.

Today’s song is from the film Karma-1933. It is a special song for two reasons. One- it was the First Talkie film made in both Hindi and English and two- this was the first Hindi film to have an English song in it. Later on, ofcourse, many more English songs have appeared in Hindi films.

Today’s song is a duet from the film Punarmilan-1940.

My favourite Marathi/Hindi/English author ISAQ MUJAWAR has written several – over 30 – books on Hindi and Marathi old films, people and related topics. One of his books in English is ” Maharashtra – The Birthplace of the Indian Film Industry”. This is a very rare book to find one. I have the original as well as its xerox copy. The original book was gifted to me by my Friend from Ahmedabad, Mr. P.S.Seshadri. He is an occasional visitor and commenter of this Blog.

Today’s song is from a very old film- Janmabhoomi-1936.

During the British Raj, film makers had to be very careful in making a film to ensure that nothing derogatory or against the Raj was found in the film. Making a Patriotic film was a risky business and hence hardly any direct patriotic dialogue or songs could be found which would incite the Censor Board to hold their film for issuance of the Censor Certificate.

Today’s song is a duet from a very old film-almost 90 year old- Gramophone Singer-1938.

From the 19th century till the beginning years of the 20th Century, the only means of public entertainment was stage dramas and local folk dances pertaining to each demographic region individually. The first gramophone recording took place in India when 2 Nautch Girls- Sashi Mukhi and Feni Bala from Amarendra Dutta’s classical Theatre sang songs in Calcutta on 8-11-1902, Saturday, for a recording.

Today’s song is from the film Dharmveer-1937.

This film was released 6 years after the Talkie film started. Just before the advent of Talkie films, Parsi theatre and other drama companies were the only Entertainment sources. Parsi Theatre was famous and most successful because it travelled all over India to perform. They used special reserved Trains to carry people and sets, drapery etc for their company from kashmir to kanyakumari and Gujarat to Rangoon. The success of Parsi Theatre was attributed to Pt. Narayan Prasad Betaab, Pt. Radheshyam Kathavachak, Agha Hashra Kashmiri and Master Fida Hussain – called the four Pillars of Dramas.

Today’s song is from a film which was a milestone in the lives of its Hero, Heroine, an actor, singer and the company that made this film. The film was Jeevan Naiya-1936, made by Bombay Talkies.

Founded in 1934 as a Public limited company, Bombay Talkies had a modern, well equipped film studio. Its owners were Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani, both coming from rich and educated families. Having spent years in England and Germany, they had very ambitious plans for film making. Their technical staff was from Germany and for other departments, they had a very good select team. The studio was run like a company, having its own canteen and other amenities for its staff.

Today’s song is from a one time famous and honoured film from the Prabhat Films – Amar Jyoti-1936.

This is one of those films which tried something new through a story – a story of a lady rebel who became a Sea Pirate. Right from the silent era first film in 1913 till 1936, it was something daring for a film story. It was the first of its type.Later on also, for whatever unknown reasons, very few films were made on pirates. When Prabhat decided on this story, the big question was who to be chosen for the main role. Durga khote’s name was finalised as she looked suitable for the role of a desperate yet kind and strong yet lovable character of the woman pirate.

Today’s song is from the film Comrades-1939.

As per the Dictionary, the meaning of the word “Comrades” is….a person who fights on the same side as you in a war or a person who is a member of the socialist political party as you (read Communists). The story of this film is neither about a war nor about communist party. It is an usual love triangle story of 2 brothers and an orphan beautiful girl. I fail to understand how the film title ” Comrades” fits with this story ! Maybe because the second world war had started, the filmmakers gave this title to this film !!
