A time was when KL Saigal was known as the foundation stone of New Theatres, and Kaanan Devi was known as the beauty and glamour. Also called as the nightingale of Bengal, was the most popular female singer of her era, and has left an indelible mark both in Hindi and Bengali cinema.

With some apprehensions and some anxiety, I put forward my first effort at writing an article on this blog. As has been mentioned by Sudhir ji in the previous post, I have been active in the comments space since September 2012. However, the delay in the first post coming up here, has not been from my side. 😉 This first post I had written almost a year ago, and sent to Atul ji in June last year. For some reasons, maybe it got lost in the pile of emails he receives, which he assures me, is the case.

“Genius is one percent inspiration and 99% perspiration”. This declaration has been made by Albert Einstein, the one who himself is regarded as one of the greatest ever. For the perceptive minds, it is ever so the experience that whenever we witness people who are considered consistent achievers, and accomplishments that are significantly impressive, then a little bit of probing behind the bright lights will reveal a whole amount of dedicated hard work behind the achievements. When we see an acrobat so effortlessly doing some wondrous acrobatics, one should not just stop at the amazement that the protagonist has made this difficult trick look very simple. We should also realize the importance of the fact that the same person spends maybe twelve to fourteen hours every day to practice the trick that is played out in a few minutes for the audience.

In the early 40s through the mid 60s, Radio was the only common entertainer for every household. Of course the choice of Gramophone was also there, but only few people could afford to own a gramophone. I remember, our morning used to open with melodious Bhajans from the Radio. Those days’ Mumbai Radio Station’ ( from the beginning, it was called Mumbai Radio station only-not Bombay anytime. For Hindi service it was Bambai) used to start early at 5.30 a.m. It first played Shehnai and then very sweet Bhajans, for an hour or so. That is how Juthika Roy and D.V.Paluskar’s names were etched on the memory card for ever. To listen to their bhajans was a divine experience.

Sachin Dev Burman was a titan amongst composers and singers of songs for Indian films and outside of them. Born on October 01 1906 in Comilla, about 100 kilometers from Dhaka Bangladesh, Sachin Dev Burman was a scion of the princely family of Tripura, now a state of India. His noble lineage is reflected in the grace of his musical creations spanning a period of 43 years until his death in Bombay in 1975.

The word Non Film Song brings few names to mind immediately, like Jagmohan, Saigal, Kamala Jharia, Juthika Roy, Pankaj Mullick etc. I could never understand the reason and logic behind most NFS singers hailing from the Eastern part of India. Even Talat Mehmood went to Calcutta and sang all his famous NFS.

Little is known about this old and obscure movie called “Panchhi” (1944). From the little information available about this movie online, it appears that the movie was directed by Barkat Mehra and that it had Ajmal, Manorama, Hari Shivdasani, Salma, Gulam Qadir, Radha etc in it.
