Today’s song is from film Kasauti-41. This was a film made by National Studios, after Sagar Movietone withdrew from it. The film was directed by a protege of Sagar- Ramchandra Thakur. The music was by Ashok Ghosh and the songs were written by Kanhaiyalal Chaturvedi (brother of actor Sankatha Prasad-a regular fixture of Sagar. Later on Kanhaiyalal himself became a famous character actor and a comic villain.) and Neelkanth Tiwari. The cast of the film was, Miss Rose, Prahlad, Veena, Sunalini Devi, Satish, Marutirao Pehelwan, Baby Meena, Ansari and many others.

Today’s song is from an obscure film Yaad-42, the first directorial adventure of actor – director Mazhar khan. He also acted as a Hero in this film, opposite Veena. Others in the film were Satish, Azuri, Indira Devi, Shehzadi, Haadi, Haroon, Ram Avtar, Devraj etc.etc. Lyricist for its 9 songs was Munshi Arzoo Lucknowi and the music was by K.Datta aka Datta Korgaonkar. Two songs of this film are already discussed, first one in 2014 and the second in 2016.

Today’s song is a Parody song from film Phoolwari-46. It is sung by Mohantara Talpade. Jayashree T and Meena T were her brother’s daughters, I believe. Mohantara was a major female playback singer in the 40s. Starting with film Mamaji-42,she sang 117 songs in 54 films, till Inaam-55. Though she got married in 1950 to Dr. Ajinkya, she continued with using her maiden name to avoid confusion. Mohantara was a popular Bhavgeet and film singer in Marathi also.

Today’s song is from film Ajamil-1948. This was the maiden venture of Sanskar Chitra, Bombay, of owner Moolraj Kapadiya, who was also the producer of this movie. The film was directed by his close relative-Jamnadas Kapadiya, for whom this was his only film as a director. The film was made in Gujarati and Hindi simultaneously. The story, screenplay and songs for the Gujarati version were by Kavi Prabhulal Dwivedi and for Hindi version it was S P Tripathi, who wrote all the 12 songs of the film. While HFGK mentions name of Dwivedi as the Lyricist, according to Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji, the famous Music Historian and Record collector, the records of the songs of Hindi version carry the name of Tripathi. The Music Director of this film was Master Mohan Junior.

The so called ‘ Historical Films’ made here are mostly on Mughal Kings or other invaders like Sikander or Changez Khan etc, who can not be called the sons of soil. Many of them came from out of India, stayed here till they benefited and left when they finished looting India. True sons of India or locals like Marathas, Rajputs, Gujars or Sikhs have been rare cases of subject matters for Hindi films.

Most of us know that Husnlal and Bhagatram were the brothers of Pt. Amarnath- the eldest brother, who too was a well known, pre Independence music director. When one discussed a movie of 1940s, one often assums by default that it must be a “boring” movie, one which may not hold the interest of later generation movie goers. And when one finds that this movie has Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis in lead roles, people who have seen them in character roles may consider dropping the idea of watching the movie.
But what if I tell you that this movie from 1941 is a laugh riot ? And that this movie was the original inspiration of “Padosan”(1968) ? I am sure that people will suddenly get interested in knowing more about this movie.
