Today’s song is from an obscure film Suhagan-1942. The film was produced by Sunrise pictures, Bombay. It was directed by a veteran, foreign educated director, J P Advani aka Jagatrai Pesumal Advani and the music was composed by Shanti Kumar Desai, for songs written by M R Kapoor. The cast of the film was Jahan ara Kajjan, Kumar, Radha Rani, Jilloo, Majid, Kesharbai, Bhudo Advani, Mirza Musharraf, Kalyani etc etc.

In the Indian film industry, it is very difficult for a producer and director to balance their ideals with money making in a film. Very few film producers have become successful in producing films combining the social purpose with commercial consideration. Prabhat Films and its director, V Shantaram was one of the earliest examples who produced and directed socially purposeful films like ‘Duniya Na Maane’ (1937), ‘Aadmi’ (1939), ‘Padosi’ (1941) etc. Fazli Brothers – Hasnain and Sibtain successfully produced and directed Muslim reformist social films like ‘Qaidi (1940), ‘Maasoom’ (1941), ‘Fashion’ (1943) etc. One of the risks of producing reformist social films is that of the backlash such films may face from the fanatics in religious groups. Hence, the commercially minded producers, by and large, avoided producing such ‘reformist’ films.

Regional language songs in Hindi movies- 1
————————————–

I had heard of ‘Rabindra Sangeet’ many years back in the context of our national anthem. Without knowing much about Rabindra Sangeet, in my younger days, I used to think that like Hindustani classical music, Carnatic classical music, folk music, Western classical music etc, Rabindra Sangeet was a different genre of music. (Now that I know it, I was not off the mark then). When I got associated with our Blog about 10 years back, I started looking at the Hindi film songs in a wider perspective encompassing, among other things, the genres of and the artists behind the Hindi film music. It was during the course of writing articles for the Blog covering songs of the golden period of Hindi film music, singers, lyricists and music directors that I came to know much about Rabindra Sangeet and its influence in Hindi film songs.

Recently, I came across a very rare song from an unreleased film ‘Rustom Aur Sohrab’ (1940s). The song was uploaded on video sharing platform by Giridharilal Vishwakarma sometime in 2018. Despite an extensive search on the website, I could not get details about the film such as producer, director, actors etc. Probably, this film may have been one among many films that had become the victims of partition in 1947.

Today’s song is from film Ram Vivah-49. This is a duet song by Manna Dey and Geeta Roy. This is the first ever duet of these singers, in their career.

Geeta, who debuted via a chorus song in 1946, won some fame with her songs in film Do Bhai-47, with music by S D Burman. However till about 1950 or so, she was still struggling to make a place in the film line. She had to compete with singers like Lata and Asha as well as Shamshad, Amirbai and Zohrabai too. Manna Dey was an occasional singer, struggling very hard to get established as either a singer or a Music Director. Good sense prevailed and he realised that singing was his forte and he concentrated on it,later. He is one of my favourite singers, who had all the merit and talent, but not a strong Luck ! He became a preferred singer for composers, whenever a Bhajan, religious song or a high pitched song was to be sung.

Today’s song is from film Bharat Milap-1942. It is sung by G M Durani and the music is by Shankar Rao Vyas, for lyrics written by Pt.Indra.

Few years back, I remember, Dr. Surjit Singh ji had published a list of 7000 names of actors, who had acted in films from the beginning till up to the year 2000. He had found this list on a site which was no more existing. I had meticulously copied that list on my Laptop, in the year 2010. Since then, I have changed my Laptop 3 times and now I do not find this list with me anymore. God knows when it got deleted or was left out uncopied, sometime.

Another of those “aa ha” moments, as I was searching for a song to celebrate an anniversary. Sitting on my hard disk for a long time, I just pulled it up and listened to it, as I searched for a song by Khusheed Bano, And wow, what a wonderful creation this one turns out to be. And with a surprise bonus that saved me some extra effort.

Saga Of Sleepless Nights – 7
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

kal raat sapne mein aaye thhey tum
mere mehboob mere mehboob

Sound of a temple bell – that is how the renowned music director OP Nayyar once described the voice of Shamshad Begum. The clear sound of the tinkle, the chime and the ringing – the quality of sound that can maybe best described with the word ‘खनकती हुई’ – I could not locate a commensurate word in English. I am sure friends and readers who have heard her songs will easily relate with what I am getting at.

Remembering Shamshad Begum today on the 101st anniversary of her birth. She was born in 1919, this day, just one day after Baisakhi, and the horrific massacre at Jalianwaala Bagh in the nearby city of Amritsar. She was born into a traditional and conservative family of limited means. One of the eight children in the family, her father was a mechanic with limited income and a large family to feed.

Saga Of Sleepless Nights – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

un aankhon mein neend kahaan
jin aankhon se preetam door base

The contest between a heart in love and the nights of loneliness is as ancient as the written word itself. Poets of yore, across the ages, and to the present times, have all written about the tribulations of the nights of loneliness. Time does pass at its own pace, but for a lonely heart pining for love, it is as if the time has come to a standstill.

The acute anxiety of the empty moments wherein apparently nothing is happening, is something that cannot be explained in words. It is a sensation that has to be experienced, to get the true flavor of the feelings that are ensconced in the words ‘hijr’ (“हिज्र”) and ‘firaaq’ (“फ़िराक़”) – the feelings of separation, the feelings of being incomplete, the feelings of anticipation, waiting, the feelings of incessant yearning that seems to rend the heart asunder.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 17
—————————————————————————

When I look back on this day (5 april) ten years ago, this output of this blog had begun to go up. Four songs were covered on 5 april 2010 which was a 100 % improvement on two songs a day that the blog had got reduced to.

Following three songs were covered on that day :

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Palat meri jaan tere qurbaan Aan Milo Sajna-1970 All songs covered
Duniya hamaare pyaar ki yoon hi jawaan Lahore-1949 08 of 10 songs covered
Bhool na jaana aaj ki baatein Waapas-1943 All songs covered
Door desh ka rahnewaala aayaa Jawab-1942 All songs covered

We can see that three of the movies whose songs were covered have already been YIPPEED during the past ten years. That leaves us with just one movie which qualifies to be discussed under “Blog Ten Year Challenge”.
