Today’s song is from film Utho Jago-1947, a completely obscure film.

1947 was a very important year, not only for India, but also for the Indian Film Industry. Creation of Pakistan , on the basis of Religion, and Partition of India prompted an unprecedented exchange of people across the borders. Millions of people left their life earnings and ran to the other side of the border to save their lives. In this melee, millions died and millions lost their properties. More than any other industry, film line was affected more because it had the maximum mixture of Muslims with Hindus and films were made at Bombay as well as Lahore. These two centres now belonged to different countries and the film industries at both places were in turmoil.

Today’s song is from the film Leela-1947.

Film Leela-1947, a Filmistan offering, was directed by Dattaram N Pai. He was actually an Editor with Filmistan. His name appears as a Director first for film Eight Days-1946. That film was actually directed by Ashok kumar, but Dattaram’s name was given as a Director in the credits. His second and last film as a Director was Leela-1947. I suppose, he did try to do justice to the Director’s chair, but after this film, he did not direct any other film. May be, looking at his limitations, Filmistan did not opt for him anymore.

Today’s song is from film Arsi-1947.

Till recently, I was wondering, what was the meaning of this Title word Arsi. I could not find the meaning anywhere and finally I left my attempts. Then one day, I read the review of this film, in the June 1948 issue of Film India and I got a new piece of wisdom that Arsi was a name of the girl in the film. It was for the first time that I learnt that a name such as Arsi could be a girl’s name in India. Out of curiosity, I checked the 3 ” Boys and Girls Names ” books that I have in my collection, but in none of the books this name was found. At last, I decided to surrender to Guru Google ji, and to my surprise, I learnt that the word means ” Mirror ” !

Today’s song is from a film Mangalsootra-1947.

In Maharashtra, from the 19th century onwards, theatre dramas became popular. They were the sole source of entertainment for the family. The stage dramas developed to a great extent, till about the 20’s decade of the twentieth century, when they faced their first competition – in the form of Silent films. However those films being silent, they could not compete wholly with dramas, which provided dialogues, living people on stage and above all music in the dramas.

Today’s song is from a historical film ” Woh Zamana “-47.

In India, importance is rarely given to history and to historical personalities born and bred in the local soil. The so called ‘ Historical Films’ made here are mostly on Mughal Kings or other invaders like Sikander or Changez Khan etc, who can not be called the sons of soil. Many of them came from out of India, stayed here till they benefited and left when they finished looting India. True sons of India or locals like Marathas, Rajputs, Gujars or Sikhs have been rare cases of subject matters for Hindi films.

Today’s song is from an obscure, unknown, ‘Ç’ grade stunt film – Toofani Tirandaz-47. This film was made by Homi Wadia’s Basant Pictures, but, for a change, it was directed by Boman Shroff – who was a regular actor in Wadia’s stable, present in almost every film of Fearless Nadia, including today’s film. The cast of the film was Nadia, Prakash, Sayani Aatish, Boman Shroff, Sona Chatterjee, Mithu miyan, Krishnakant, Rajpoot(horse) and Austin ki Bachhi(a jalopy). The film had 8 songs, all written by Begum Aziz Minai ( her other film was Aabida-47 in which she wrote 3 songs). Music was composed by A.Karim.

Today’s song is from film Naiya-1947. This social film was made by Mohan Pictures of Ramniklal Shah, which normally made C grade stunt films. The director was Aslam Noori and the music was by Anil Biswas. The cast of the film included Mazhar khan, Munawar Sultana, Ashraf khan, Anwar, Shehzadi, Suman, Balakram, Siraz etc etc. The film had 6 songs listed in HFGK, with record numbers. However it also indicates that there could be 3 more songs, about which no information is available. Lyricist’s name is not mentioned in HFGK,but I find that moviepedia.in mentions name of Aslam Noori – the director as its Lyricist also.

Today’s song is from an obscure film ‘Ye hai Zindagi’ from 1947.

Very few people must have heard about this film. That is probably because, it was made in 1947- the year of India’s Partition. As the year 1947 began, news was circulating about the partition. Like many other industries, film industry was also worried. There was an air of uncertainty. Who will stay and who will migrate was hotly debated in the privacy of homes, studios and clubs. People looked at each others with suspicion. Muslims were worried about their safety in India, in spite of the assurances by Gandhi and Nehru.
