CHUPKE CHUPKE (1948) was produced under the banner of Rajeshwari Films, Bombay and it was directed by Baij Sharma and K C Verma. The star cast included Nirmala Devi, Shanti Kumar, Suraj Bakshi, Zarina, Nafees Begum etc. I do not have any inkling about the story of the film.

Heer Ranjha of 1948 was produced by Punjab Film Corporation, Bombay and directed by Vali Saheb, who also wrote lyrics for all the eleven songs for the film. One of the songs was in Punjabi language, no wonder as the production house was Punjab Film Corporation and the film was based on very famous tragic folk-lore of lovers Heer and Ranjha from Punjab. The star cast according to HFGK included Mumtaz Shanti, Ghulam Mohammad, Gulab, Roop Kamal, Majnu, Raamlal, Gulnar, Malik Amin, Aziz, Minaai, Neela Devi, Aziz Kashmiri, Nauratavi etc.

PARAAYI AAG (1948) was produced under the banner of Great India Pictures and was directed by Najam Naqvi. The star cast included Munawwar Sultana, Ulhas, Mumtaz (Madhubala), Sheri, A Shah, W M Khan, Jilloo Bai etc. The story of the film revolves around the mistaken identities of the two prospective brides and bridegrooms. This leads to first, the comical situations and later, to some melodrama before misunderstandings are sorted out.

For the last few days, I have been listening to songs of Dilshad Begum, a name I came to know only a couple of months back while searching for some rare songs of the 40s. In my view, her renditions are different from what I have been used to hear the songs from Lahore-based female singers. I found her voice to be the softer than those of her contemporary singers like Zohrabai Ambalewaali, Shamshad Begum and Zeenat Begum. Who is Dilshad Begum?

DIDI, a social film of 1948 was Produced by Navbharat Films, Bombay and Directed by Mukund Masurekar. The unique thing that struck me was that Mukund Masurekar was not only the Director but also gave music for the film. Chaand Sitare, a 1948 social film was produced by Ravindra Art Productions, Mumbai and was directed by Ishwar Chandra Kapur. The star cast according to HFGK consisted of Jeevan, Manorama, Rajan Haksar, Niranjan Sharma, Anita, Satish, Leela etc. The film had eight songs composed by Premnath (not the actor/villain) and the lyricists for the film were IC Kapur and Aziz Kashmiri. HFGK is not vocal about who is the lyricist for the song under discussion.
