#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
————————————————————————

The song in this post is from the movie ‘Saagar Tarang-1950’. This movie had made its debut on the blog on 06.02.2014. While presenting the first song from this movie our editor Atul jee had mentioned the following.

“Saagar Tarang” (1950) is a movie about which hardly any information is available, other than the fact that Geeta Dutt has sung a few songs in this movie and these songs are available on line. Other than that, hardly any information is available on this movie.

Today’s song is from the film Pagle-1950.

The film was made by Markari Productions, Bombay. It was directed by Pratima Dasgupta. The music director was V.G.Bhatkar aka Snehal Bhatkar. The cast of the film was Begum Para, Madhuri, Jahagirdar, Pratima Devi, Mubarak, David, Agha, Cuckoo and some others. I have neither seen this film nor I could get my hands on its story, but I believe this was a dual story of a failed love and true love pair.

Today’s song is from the film Babuji-1950.

The film was made by Uday Productions, Bombay. It was a regular stunt film from the stable of Master Bhagwan – who had done a great job of keeping this genre alive through the 1940’s. In the beginning of the 1950s, Bhagwan turned to making social films, with the Blockbuster musical film Albela-1951.

Bhagwan was elated highly with the unexpected success of his foray into the social Genre and he went on making such social films. He had, however, not realised that 10 Albela was a novelty for his captive audience and 2) 75 % success of Albela was due to superb music by C.Ramchandra, who was at the pinnacle of his career that time !

Today’s song is from the film Apni Chhaya-1950.

The literal meaning of this film title is ‘our own shadow’. However, after reading the film’s story, one wonders what way this title is related to what happens in the film /. This is not the only example. There are several such misleading or confusing film titles. Maybe the producers were fond of fancy titles irrespective of the film’s content. It is also possible that there were changes in the film story during the shooting and thus the relation between the film content and the film title deferred like Ravan and Bibhishan !

The film, made by Chitralaya Ltd. Bombay was ably directed by P.L.Santoshi – who also wrote the lyrics for this film. During this time period Santoshi was completely enamored with one of his Heroines – Rehana. When I saw Santoshi’s name as a director, I looked into the cast of the film, but did not find Rehana’s name in the list.

The cast of the film was Sulochana Chatterjee, Balwant Singh, Radhakishen, Sajjan, Mumtaz Ali (Mehmood’s father), Ramsingh, Dulari, Neelam, Jawahar Kaul and others. The music was mostly by Husnlal-Bhagatram, except 2 songs which were composed by Pt. Hanuman Prasad (he discovered Geeta Roy in 1946).

#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
—————————————————————

Today’s song is from the 1950 movie “Baseraa”. It was directed by Inayat for ‘Watan Pictures, Bombay’. This was a ‘social’ genre of movie as mentioned in Geet Kosh Vol-II (1941-1950).
Geet Kosh mentions Ramola, Heeralal, Veena Kumari, Roopmala, Chanda and Bhudo Advani as the cast of this movie. Six songs are mentioned in Geet Kosh leaving blanks after that indicating that there might be more songs in this movie whose details are not known. All the six songs for ‘Baseraa-1950’ are penned by Sardar Ilham and music is composed by M. A. Rauf. The singers of this movie include Sulochana Kadam, Mubarak Begam, and B.S. Nanji.

Today’s song is from the film Madhubala-1950.

When I have no specific song or a film in mind to write about, I scan through the HFGK or the index of Film titles. When a name creates curiosity or interest, I go to the HFGK for details. My first choice is a singer whose style and songs I like. The second point is the Mukhda of the song to get an idea of the song. If these things evoke some feelings in me, I go through the later steps- like to find out if this is still not yet posted on the Blog, whether it is available on YouTube and if it is in full length etc etc.

Today’s song is the last song from the film Lajawab-1950. With this song the film will be YIPPEED !

The year 1950 was the end of the second decade of the Talkie film. It has been just about 3 years since we got our Independence. The film industry seemed to stabilise after the upheaval caused by the mass migration of Muslim artists and technicians from India to their new Utopia – Pakistan. The second line of ‘ waiting in the Q’ artists had taken over without much trouble. The 20 year old ‘ Studio System’ was breaking up and Freelancing was the code now. The cost of film production, from a mere 30 to 40000 rupees in the early 30’s has now escalated to 5 to 6 lakhs per film. This was also due to the ever increasing star costs from 3-4 thousand per film to almost 50-60 thousand per film for ‘A’ grade actors. The Black money in the market was now freely used in the film industry.

Today’s song is from a controversial film, released at the end of the 1940’s decade – Hanste Aansoo-1950.

First of all the title itself seems to contain contrasting emotions. One smiles when he is happy and one has tears when he is hurt or sad. I feel we get tears when we are sad or hurt of course, but even when a person is too happy he gets tears in his eyes. For example, when a child is away for many years, the mother feels sad and weeps in his memory. But when he comes back after many years and hugs his mother, she gets tears at that time also, with happiness !
