Most people who worked in the Film industry in any field- be it acting, direction, composing music, dancing, producing, in fact any department-joined the industry on their own. However, there was also a class of artistes who were forced by the circumstances to work in film industry- for example, the Mangeshkar sisters. Then there were artistes who were forced by their near ones to join film industry, like Meena Kumari or Madhubala, for example. And there were artistes who came on their own to build a career in film industry, like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand etc. Few artists joined the industry because it was the family tradition, like Raj Kapoor, Shammi and Shashi Kapoor etc.. Then there were also some artistes who had never dreamt of it, but had to enter acting field, like Ashok Kumar, for example.

There are instances of Hindi film artists, especially of the 30s to 50s who rose to great heights in their filmy career but died as paupers and penniless. For instance, Chandramohan, the most handsome actor of his time who captivated the audience with his acting prowess (and also with his eyes) in films like ‘Amritmanthan’ (1934), ‘Pukar’ (1941), ‘Roti’ (1942), ‘Humaayun’ (1945) and ‘Shaheed’ (1948) died in 1949 in acute poverty at a young age of 44. It is said that his funeral expenses were borne by his close friend Motilal. But after 16 years of Chandramohan’s death, Motilal also died in 1965 almost penniless.

Today (27 november 2013) is the 40th death anniversary of Bhagatram (Date of death 27 november 1973) of the Husnlal Bhagatram music director duo. It is unfortunate that little information is available about this duo who had the distinction of being the first music director duo in Hindi movies.

I had never heard of the film ‘Baawraa’ (1950) until last week. While browsing on the internet, I came across an audio clip of a song from this film. The song was ‘saahil jo dubo de kashti ko saahil ki tamanna kaun karen’. I liked the lyrics and the music composition with Rafi’s voice giving it a finishing touch as per the mood of the song. The song in theghazal format was written by Amarnath Khanna and set to music by Krishan Dayal. The film was produced under the banner of Shri Durga Pictures and directed by G Rakesh.

Wow, what a song this one is. I am hearing it for the first time, and it has just taken over my heart and mind. The composition seems to have an earthy simplicity that is just so endearing.
