In the year 2014 I had done a series called “Chaandni Raaten”. The series remained sort of incomplete, and now it is too far back to restart it. As is my practice, I give a list of all songs featuring in a particular series in the last song post, even that remained to be done. I had planned to post a few more songs, which were suggested and were suitable to the theme. But that was not to be. So I am posting here one of those songs as a closure. This song was found for me by one of the regular visitors to the blog ‘ blufire ji’, as I was looking for a Talat Mehmood song for the series.

Today’s song is from film Naaz-54. It is sung by Meena Kapoor and chorus. This song has a very lilting tune and the Trademark chorus of Anil Biswas. I have realized, over a period, that he loved to have at least a song or two in almost every film, where Chorus is prominent in the song. What’s more, his own voice is always distinctly identifiable in every chorus.

Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’ से ‘ह’ तक (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 16

‘ज’
“जब लड़का कह दे हाँ और लड़की कह दे ना”
A phrase in English language – ‘man of God’ is generally used for a person whose personality abounds with all qualities that are good in a human being. Some people that we know to be religious, humble, polite, kind, caring, helpful etc., we apply this phrase when we talk of them.
Talking of Rafi Sb, I have heard Nalin ji (Nalin Shah, the film historian and author) often use another phrase that is decidedly more special. He refers to Rafi Sb as ‘God’s own man’. We can discuss the etiology and the import of these phrases in detail. But of course the phrase used by Nalin ji, has a very special connotation. Some special people will be known as ‘man of God’, by the qualities we like about them, and the manner in which we see them interact with others around them. But there is a more rare breed of people, who have something special, an aura about them, that simply their presence gives a feeling of being close to the Supreme. I have never been in the presence of Rafi Sb, but hearing from those who have met him and interacted with him, one gets a feeling that the phrase applied by Nalin ji is very appropriate.

I often gets confused in recognising the voice of Meena Kapoor while listening to mp3 clips of her rare songs and the reason is that I find her voice closely resembling that of Geeta Dutt. I feel that, in a way, Meena Kapoor is to Geeta Dutt what Suman Kalyanpur is to Lata Mangeshkar. I can understand as to why Suman Kalyanpur lagged behind Lata Mangeshkar in terms of playback singing assignments as, among other reasons, the latter had already established her footprint in Bollywood when Suman Kalyanpur entered some time in 1954. But why did Meena Kapoor not get as many assignments as a playback singer as Geeta Dutt got when both started their playback singing at the same time?

The song under discussion today is from the film Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo-1952. The film was produced and directed by Pyarelal Santoshi aka P.L.Santoshi, who wrote its songs also. One of the iconic songs of Lata “tum kya jaano, tumhari yaad mein hum kitna royen…” is from this film only. It was a film made by Santoshi Productions,Bombay.

It is a very special occasion for the blog but this special occasion escaped everyone’s attention. The reason could be that my manual score keeping gave me a different figure compared to the automatic count given by the blog. When I accidentally looked at the count on the right hand side of the blog, I found out that Asha Bhonsle’s count of songs in the blog stood at the round figure of 2000 !
