What happens when an actress known to us for playing tragedy roles is paired up with an actor known to us for playing comedy roles ? Much to our delight, the result is a light hearted movie most of the time.

hamaare baad ab mehefil mein afsaane bayaan honge
bahaaren humko dhoondegi na jaane hum kahaan honge
These two lines of a song from film BAAGHI (1953) sum up the realities of our life. This song penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and coming out of the magical combination of Lata-Madan Mohan was long overdue to be discussed in this blog. One song from this film has been discussed more than a year back.

I keep stumbling upon unheard of gems while looking for some other songs. These days I have got the company of several fellow stumblers with me. 🙂 Here is a melody that Khyati Bhatt just stumbled upon while looking for some other song. Coming across unheard of songs just like that is a luxury that was not available till a few years ago. Technology and YT zindabad !

In the golden era of 1950s and 60s of the Hindi film songs, Lata Mangeshkar had sung quite a large number of songs composed by almost all the renowned music directors ( of course with the exception of O P Nayyar) of that time. Many of her songs of that era are still popular. However, there were some songs she sang under the batons of C Ramchandra and Madan Mohan which were, in my view, a class by themselves. Unfortunately, some of these classy songs were from films which flopped miserably and soon they went into oblivion. With them songs from such films were almost ‘buried’ under the ‘debris’ of the new songs over a period of time like that of Harppan and Mohenjodaro civilisation.

It is not just I, but the regulars of this blog too keep coming across rare musical gems from Hindi movies.
Here is what Khyati Bhatt, a regular contributor to this blog, discovered recently. Like her, I too believe that this song has to be one of the most remarkable songs that Talat Mehmood has sung in his career. It is a twist of irony that a song as wonderful as this one should end up in obscurity whereas it deserves to be counted among the best known songs of Talat Mehmood.

Janaury 31st is the death anniversary of Suraiyya who was India’s greatest female singer-actor of the post-partition period. While reading her profile and biography, I felt that her life had twists and tales worthy of making a full length feature film. For instance, her romantic involvement with Dev Anand, a dominating maternal grandmother who, apart from deciding her filmy career, played a spoilsport in her romantic relationship and finally her decision to quit films to live a life of seclusion, can be some of the ingredients for a cinematic presentation. Suraiyya’s life cycle can best be described in some of her own renditions like Laayi khushi ki duniya (Vidya) , Tere nainon ne chori kiyaa mera chhota sa jiya pardesiya (Pyaar ki jeet) and Raste pe ham khade hain dil e beqaraar le kar (Rajput) to Ye kaisi ajab daastaan ho gayi hai(Rustam Sohrab)(1963) and finally to Rahiye ab aisi jagah chal kar jahan koi naa ho (Mirza Ghalib) .

Qadam qadam pe bahaaren lutaataa
Posted on: January 30, 2012
When I look at the lyrics of this song, I feel that I have come across the lyrics of this song, and perhaps this song was among one of the guest posts by Sudhir jee. But when I check up with the list of songs that have been posted, I am unable to find this song. So perhaps this is a different song, though with lyrics that sound quite familiar, especially the line“yeh kaun aaya hai aanchal udaata”.
