In Hindi movies, stories of old movies are often repackaged and presented as new movies. There have been occasions when the same story was made into two films by the same maker. For example, Mehboob Khan made “Aurat”(1940) with Sardar Akhtar, Surendra, Kanhaiyalal and Arun Kumar Ahuja etc in it. He repackaged the story of this movie and made the blockbuster “Mother India”(1957) with Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar etc in it. Both these movies turned out to be successful. If we look at movies of recent vintage then Rajshree Productions made “Nadiya Ke Paar”(1982) with Sachin, Sadhana Singh etc in a low budget and this movie did well in rural and semi rural areas of Hindi belt. One decade later, the same movie was repackaged and presented as a tale of city slickers instead of village folks and the result was a mega hit viz. “Ham Aapke Hain Kaun”(1993).

After a longish break, here is the fourth article on the series “Basics of Music”. In the first three articles, we looked at notes (swars) and rhythm (taal). Then we discussed the classification of “Raag” into various categories.
In this part, we will discuss another important topic- viz. how to create swars on a musical instrument.

THE VELVET MAGIC-TALAT DUETS ….Song No.-9
———————————————-
Today’s song is from the film Bahu-55. It is sung by Talat and Geeta Dutt.
Talat Mehmood and Geeta Dutt have sung very few duets together. This is rather surprising because both of them were in their prime and in good demand during the period from 1948 to mid 60s. The statistics in this blog shows that they have sung at least 20 duets in 16 movies (including this song). This figure is higher than the statistics available elsewhere which states that they sang only 13 duets together in 10 movies.

The Voice of Mukesh #68
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
The phase of Mukesh’s career in the years from 1954 to 1957 makes a very ineffectual reading. In these four years, the number of songs sung by him in each year did not even touch the double digit numbers. After recording 10 film songs in 1953, the numbers for subsequent years are – 6 for 1954, 9 for 1955, 7 for 1956 and 5 for 1957. It was only in 1958 that these numbers pulled themselves back into double digits – he recorded 13 songs in 1958. But all said and done, the equations had changed, by the time 1950s came to a close.

The Voice of Mukesh #67
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
The journey following the songs of Mukesh now enters 1955. As we come into the time period of mid fifties and later, we are going to find more and more songs being already posted. The songs that are remaining now are the ones which mostly are obscure, and less heard earlier. But there is fun in filling the gaps. And if this song is something to go by, it is a lots and lots of fun.

People who have been watching Hindi movies for long know that these movies were not just about hero meeting heroine and singing songs addressed to each other. The movie used to have other characters as well, who would either be in support of the lead pair or against them.
