These are the days of being political correct. Instead of calling a spade a spade, these days we use euphemisms instead. Thus, what was called an imbecile in the past is now called “differently enabled” and what was once called blind is now called “visually impaired”. Those were the days when cutting trees and hunting tigers was considered the in thing. Now these activities are banned.

I was aware of a movie called “Do Phool” (1973) but it now I have come to know that there was another movie of this name in 1958. This movie “Do Phool”(1958) is far more obscure that its 1973 namesake. This movie was obviously a B grade movie with no saleable stars in it.

“Sahaara” (1958) is one of those movies that have been totally forgotten with time. But when one watches the movie, or listens to the songs, one realises that this movie and/or its songs deserve to be much better known instead of lying forgotten.

“Zimbo” (1958) was a movie in which a chimp called Pedro had played the second lead. And by all indications, Pedro had stolen the show in this B grade movie produced by Wadia Movietone.

When I was growing up, I used to hear that the story of Hindi movies mostly consisted of hero and heroine falling in love with each other and then singing songs running around trees.

In Hindi movies, songs have traditionally played many roles. For one, songs are often the main reason why many people come to watch the movie. In one old movie, which had no songs in it, the maker had to actually explain it to the audience why that movie had no songs. And that explanation cut no ice with the public.
