Today (27 june 2015) is the birth anniversary of R D Burman (27 june 1939-4 january 1994). Today also happens to be a weekend, viz a day when I am theoretically free. So I have resolved to try and post as many R D Burman compositions today as I can. I have a few lyrics and writeup contributions from our contributors and I also expect some more special contribution(s) as the day progresses.

“Maaya Jaal”(1962) aka “Jaadoogar” was a partially colour film (which was usual for movies of that era). This movie was directed by Babubhai Mistry for Rajhans Pictures, Bombay. This quintessential B grade movie had Ranjan, Chitra, Manhar Desai, Krishna Kumari, Pal Sharma, Mumtaz Begam, Nazeer, Shree Bhagwan, Maruti, Radhika etc in it.

I am thankful to Ava Suri who, about a month back, had suggested to me to consider presenting a NFS ghazal ‘saaqi ki har nigaah pe bal khaa ke pee gaya’ (1965) sung by Rafi. Let me confess that I had missed listening to this great ghazal of Jigar Moradabadi all these years. This request gave me an opportunity to study in detail the ghazals of Jigar Moradabadi who was considered the last icon of classical Urdu poetry. He was such an interesting personality that I am tempted to write a full length article on him for the Blog which I will do in the near future.

This song is a special search request from a dear friend Arvinder ji Sharma. Regular team members would have noticed this name being appended to the email ‘To’ list in recent email exchanges. I got introduced to him, at first through our mutual friend Zafar Bhai, and then once again the threads met thanks to AK ji (of SOY) when he invited us for a get together.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 21

There is an email from Avinash ji today morning wherein he has commented about the pace of posting in the current couple of weeks. I quote – “. . . and this is where all my daily routine is getting affected, because the blog and the posts is my biggest motivation and new posts are not coming at earlier pace (leave alone my contributions 🙂 even others’ are very less, no doubt, as you had said our BOSSES must be having some other priorities#”. So not exactly taken by any surprises, still it is heartening to note that the daily routine of our fellow travelers is entwined with the set of daily posts that appear on this blog. I know there have been similar discussions and comments in the past. And the spirit continues. 🙂

Fabulous Foot Tappers – 4

Once in an interview, Hemant Kumar had the following to say about the very interesting working style of Rajendra Krishan – “. . .once the recording date got fixed, he would keep in touch with the music director. He would come and meet regularly in the studios. But he won’t work. One day, it will be a lunch outing at a place which offers a famous specialty. The next day it will be something else. The recording date is drawing near, but the lyrics are nowhere in sight. One day he will come to studio then go to the races. When just two or three days would be left before the recording date, we would start pestering and pressurizing him. He would then just smile and go sit in quiet corner, and then come back after 15 or 20 minutes with the completed song.”
Remembering Rajendra Krishan on his birth anniversary today (6th June). Born in 1919, he would have been 97 years old today.

Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 8
—————————————————–
दुनिया के बाज़ार में सब कुछ बिकता है, भगवान भी ।
(In this marketplace of the world, everything sells, even God.)
Here we have a small child who is selling God. Well, not exactly. He is selling small clay figurines of various Hindu Gods. This scenario is not unique to our country or this religion. In every society across the globe, wherever there is a worship of a personal God with a form, one can witness such vendors who sell the prevalent and the accepted images of the Almighty. Even in religions and faiths where the worship is of a formless God, and it is not possible to create images of Him, we have an abstract representation in form of words and scripts that replace the image. The concept and this need of the human mind to relate to a God like entity is and has been a powerful driving force for people across the ages and across the continents. Whatever may be the belief system, one will always find symbols or tokens or images or words, available to be purchased, for a price, at centers of worship and pilgrimage.
