Making movies is a business venture, and that too a risky business venture where there is no assurance of earning a profit on one’s investment. In movie making, the producer typically raises the finances, gigns up director, technicians, artists etc and makes a film. Later he gets the movie released in theatres. If he is lucky, the movie may do well, but in most cases the movie may fail to attract movie wathers and the investment made in making that movie goes down the drain.

In our day to day life we face some or the other discomforting and problematic situations, most of which get sorted out over time. The end of such situations is the beginning of happiness.
One of the discomforting situations which I have started facing in the post- retirement years is that I suddenly remember the tune of a song which I had heard quite often in my younger days on the radio but I am not able to recall the wordings or other details. I become restless until I find the song. It is by chance that I get to listen to the song on YT or on the Blog after months. And the pleasure I get in solving this kind of ‘puzzle’ is akin to attaining nirvana.

Troika of the Blog’s latest century singers – Mukesh, Rafi and Kishore Kumar : 3. Kishore Kumar
—————————————————————————————————
After reading a vast repository of information available on the internet as well as in the books, I am pretty certain about the personalities of Mukesh, Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Talat Mehmood, Manna Dey, Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhonsle etc. But I am not so sure about what sort of person Kishore Kumar was. He was branded as eccentric, unpredictable, money minded, stingy etc etc. In a rare interview conducted by Lata Mangeshkar about a couple of years before his death in 1987, he had revealed that he donned the mask of eccentricity and unpredictable behaviour just for those persons whom he disliked and did not wish to be associated with. But how can one explain his eccentric behaviour even with his elder brother Ashok Kumar and his family members whom he respected a lot ? (In this context, there is a story narrated by Ashok Kumar’s daughter, Preeti Ganguly which I will skip here. (Those interested may read it here).

Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 7
—————————————————–
I remember such sellers from my travels in childhood. It was a time when intercity travel of half a day or less would be a journey by bus, and a longer journey would be by train. Both my maternal and paternal families are spread out over the Punjab and Himachal areas north of Delhi – Chandigarh, Simla, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar. All these cities being less than a day’s journey, our travels were generally by the intercity state transport buses. Any other travels, like visiting other metropolitan cities which are all south of Delhi, would generally be by train. During my school years, travel to visit family was quite a regular affair, once or twice a year during vacation breaks. Other travels, to places like Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and Bangalore were less frequent.

When ‘Anand’ was released in theatres in 1970, I was still in school. I remember I did not get a chance to see this film on the big screen in the first run. It would be later re runs that I got to see this film. Being still not very involved with cinema and music, the best fare for us used to be what we could see on Doordarshan. Rather, whatever was telecast on Doordarshan was always the quality stuff in my mind. So having watched films like ‘Sikander’ (1941) and ‘Roti’ (1942) and ’Baazi’ (1951) on TV, the micro mind of mine carried them as benchmarks and anything that we would see on posters and billboards going to and from school, would be just so so. I remember, when we came to know about this film ‘Anand’, the names Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan did not mean much to us. Rajesh Khanna, to some extent, as we had all heard the “Mere Sapnon Ki Raani Kab Aayegi Tu” that became popular the year earlier.
