Today (4 january 2013) is the birth anniversary of Nirupa Roy (4 January 1931 – 13 October 2004). To most moviewatchers, she was the eternally suffering Maa of Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor in several movies of 1970s, but that was only part of her impressive cv. She had made her debut an a movie actress in late 1940s and she acted as a leading lady in many movies throughout 1950s and early part of 1960s before easing into the roles of Bhabhi and later maa from late 1960s onwards. I find it curious to realise now that she at the age of 44, played the mother of Amitabh Bachchan (then aged 34) and Shashi Kapoor (then aged 38) in 1975 in Deewaar.

The film ‘Mohabbat Isko Kehte Hain’ from 1965 is simply a treasure house of wonderful songs. And so it is, given that the lyrics are coming from the pen of Majrooh Sb and the music is created by Khayyaam Sb, the genius of the understated melody who has remained always by the banks of the mainstream. Whatever may be the film, his creations are simply fantastic.

“Krorepati” (1961) was a Saigal Brothers production. It was produced by Omprakash Saigal and directed by Mohal Saigal. The movie had Kisore Kumar, Shashikala, Kum Kum, K. N. Singh, Anoop Kumar, Mirza Musharaff, Radhakishan, Haroon, S. Bannerjee, Ramlal, Shamlal, Brahm Bharadwaj, Daya Devi, Pal Sharma, Prem, Dev Chand etc in it.

So there is one more film that makes its debut on the blog today. ‘Chale Hain Sasuraal’ is a film from 1966, produced under the banner of Krishnadeep Productions, directed by Dharam Kumar. A typical grade B film with Helen and Chandrashekhar in lead roles. The rest of the star cast includes Bhagwaan, Meenakshi, Madhumati, Sherry, Sunder, Tuntun, Aruna Irani, Mirza Musahrraf, Sheikh, Polson, Indira Bansal, Dilip Dutt, Jerry, Jilaani, Thakur, Anwari, Raj Deewan, Maqbool, Bimla Kashmiri, RN Nambiar. The music for this film comes from the baton of C Arjun. And the lyrics are from the pen of Qamar Jalaalabaadi.

In the long string of ‘Ustad’ films, here is one that is a new entrant for this blog. ‘Birju Ustad’ is a 1964 film from the banner of Movie Miracles, Bombay, directed by Manu Desai. The 1965 film ‘Johar Mehmood in Goa’ is a veritable treasure house of wonderful songs and music. A popular hit in its own time, this film still continues to be known for the songs. Recently, I came across a non-filmy song on the internet, sung by Talat Mehmood which happened to be his first disc cut in 1941 for HMV. The mukhda of the song was
