Daan Singh, a name that may not ring many bells or evoke many memories. But the mention of memorable songs such as ‘Mere Hamnasheen Mere Humnawaan’ (Geeta Dutt, Bhool Na Jaanaa, c1965, unreleased), ‘Zikr Hota Hai Jab Qayaamat Kaa’ and ‘Who Tere Pyaar Ka Gham, Ik Bahaanaa Thhaa Sanam’ (both Mukesh, My Love, 1970), or ‘Laagaa Mohey Pehli Baar, Pandrah Pe Ek Nayaa Saal’ (Asha Bhosle, Toofaan, 1969), is sure to vibrate some strings inside and the mind is sure to respond with a ‘wow’.

14th july is Madan Mohan’s death anniversary. When I searched for a few Madan Mohan songs to be discussed on this occassion, I came across some unbelievable gems and I was left wondering how I have missed out on these gems all these days. I regard myself as some sort of a research scholar on Madan Mohan can be caught unawares like this, then just imagine what undiscovered Madan Mohan gems still lie ahead of us, waiting to be discovered. Most songs discussed in this blog are movie songs which were included in the movie when that movie was released. But there are some cases in which songs, even though they were recorded as part of the movie ended up getting excluded from the movie for one reason or the other. In some cases, the movie makers decided to exclude the song, in some cases, censors ordered the exclusion of the song, and in one case, this was done one week after the movie was released !

I became aware of the movie “Heer Ranjha” (1970) in 1974, while going through movie magazines, which incidentally were supposed to be out of bounds for school kids barely in their teens. 🙂 But I was a kid who loved reading all kinds of publications, including screenplays of movies too. Yes, those days screenplays of movies used to get published too. I read screenplays of “Bobby” (1973) and “Aasheerwaad” (1968). I never watched these movies and I never thought that I missed anything by not watching them, that is how vivid the screenplays used to be.

My readers may have noticed that I have been discussing lots of songs written by Indeewar these days. My readers (if they are interested in cricket) may also know that world cup cricket is also being played these days. so, to borrow a term from cricket, Raja ( a fellow cricket enthusiast) has also noticed that I am giving Indeewar much of the strike.
