Hullo Atuldom
Wishing all the followers of the blog a Happy Dassehra. Happy Vijayadashmi. A day which is the culmination of the Sharada Navaratri. Navaratri means nine nights & Vijayadashmi is the 10th day when all the festivities reach a finale.
Much of North India would have had Raam-Leela as part of the festivities & we will witness Ravan-Dahan on the 10th day.
In West India we have the Devi installed in the form of Ambemaa with Aarthis, Garba & Dandiya forming the part of celebrations. Recently, I learnt that the Dandiya-sticks are representative of the weapons that were used by Ambemaa (Durga Maa) in her battle against the Rakshasaa “Mahishasura”.

‘Manzilein Aur Bhee Hain’ (1974) was produced by Johny Bakshi and was directed by Mahesh Bhatt who also wrote the story. The dialogues were written by the veteran theatre personality, Satyadev Dube. The cast included Kabir Bedi and Prema Narayan in the lead roles supported by Gulshan Arora, Purnima, Sudhir, Mac Mohan, Mukesh Bhatt, Shah Durrani, Kirti Kumar, Viju Khote, Ranvir Raj, Uma Dutt etc. Both Johny Bakshi and Mahesh Bhatt made their debuts as producer and director, respectively. Both had known each other while working for Raj Khosla as Assistant Director/Production Controller.
The film was completed in 1972 but ran into problems with Censor Board for about 15 months. In an interview, Mahesh Bhatt revealed that for Censor Board, the film’s two fugitives’ polyandrous relationship with a woman who is their partner in crime amounted to undermining the institution of marriage. Finally, the film got the Censor Certificate on August 13, 1974, as an ‘Adult’ film with cuts. The film had a limited theatrical released on September 27, 1974. The VCD of the film I watched, has a 2016 Censor Certificate with major cuts to make it fit for public viewing under parental guidance. The theme of the film is that there are alternative paths to becoming a criminal who lives under the constant fear of death.

We know that S D Burman sang about 150 Bengali NFSs in the beginning of his career. Most of them became very popular. In Hindi, the number is about 25. We have 5 of them on the blog.
Today on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, here is a lesser known SDB song. I couldn’t get much detail. Looks like it must have been recorded in the year 1948, in the days following Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. However some sources on internet mention the year as 1960 for this. Also this seems to be album containing more songs and titled as ‘Gun Dhaam Hamaare Gandhi jee’. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this song and its details please.

Today’s song is from an almost 90 year old film, Manzil-1936.
For a long time, I was searching for a song from this film, but none were available. Finally, I wrote to Shri Syed Jafer Shah ji and enquired if he has any song of this film, other than those already posted here. Promptly, he sent me today’s song- no.7 as per HFGK list. HFGK showed the singer’s name as Harimati, but the song sent by Jafer Bhai was sung by K.C.Dey. I pointed out this to him. He sent me the photo of the record No. 6764, which was tallying with the no. in HFGK. The film name was correct and the singer’s name was K.C.Dey. Obviously the song was correct. It seems that Harimati sang it in the film, but the record was in the voice of K.C.Dey. Or the HFGK had made a mistake in the singer’s name. Whatever it is, the song was correct as per the record number and details on it. So, no problem. Then our friend Sadanand ji Kamath uploaded it for me. Thanks to Jafer Bhai and Kamath ji.

‘Dastoor’ (1991) was produced by Harish Munjal and Prem Chugh and was directed by Anil Mattoo. The cast included debutants Dolly Minhas, Pomy Dev in the lead roles supported by Sharmila Tagaore, Suresh Oberoi, Raza Murad, Alok Nath, Manohar Singh, Johny Lever, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Dinesh Hingoo, Harish Munjal etc. Amita Nangia made her friendly appearance in the film. I have watched the film for the first time only few days back in one sitting. The film is a murder mystery drama with a fast-paced narratives to keep the audience engrossed while watching the film.
The opening scene of the film gives a feel of watching some of the suspense thriller films of the 1960s like ‘Wo Kaun Thhi’ (1964), ‘Poonam Ki Raat’ (1965) and ‘Mera Saaya’ (1966). A girl in white, without any expression, walks through the forest in a dark night with a background song, her destination being an architecturally impressive palatial mansion in which the owner lives alone. The caretkaer of the dmansion is seen smoking his chillum. After some time, he is seen switching off the lights of the first floor of the mansion. Simultaneously, a man in hat is also walking toward the mansion. An unidentified person has killed the watchman of the mansion by suffocating him. Inside the house is a pet eagle which makes a noise, probably giving a notice that someone has entered inside the mansion. Another man is slowly climbing the stairs with camera focussed only on his legs. Now, inside the mansion, there are four persons in addition to the owner of the house – the caretaker, the girl in white, the man with a hat and a person climbing the stairs in the mansion. All these scenes of movements give an indication to the audience that something is going to happen inside the mansion.

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————
(Yippeeee to ‘Bhool Na Jaanaa (Unreleased)-1970)
———————————————————
Today’s song is from an unreleased movie ‘Bhool Na Jaanaa-1970’. Music for this movie was composed by Daan Singh. In Geet Kosh the banner of this movie is mentioned as Integrity International. There is no information about the director of this movie or its cast. But luckily there is detailed information about its songs which is that this movie has seven songs. Geet Kosh leaves a space with dots assuming that there would have been more songs for this movie but which are not known and neither available I guess. This movie had made its debut on this blog on 24.09.2010 where in our editor Atul jee had posted the first song from this movie. Thereafter five more songs from this movie have been covered on this blog taking the tally of the songs of this movie to six. All the five posts after the debut post were presented by our Sudhir jee covering rare information about this movie and information about the composer -who remained an unsung hero in the history of Hindi Cinema.

Today’s song is from the film Pukar-1939.
The film was made by Minerva Movietone, Bombay. It was directed by the owner of the banner, Sohrab Modi himself. The lyricist was Syed Amir Hyder Kamaal Amrohi or simply Kamaal Amrohi, who became famous as a producer, director and a poet in later years. One of the points of his fame was that he had married Meena kumari. His surname was actually Naqvi which he never used and opted for highlighting his home town Amroha. he was also a screenplay writer, a Dialogue and storywriter. His famous films were Mahal-1949 and Pakeezah-1972. Meena Kumari- his 3rd wife died soon after the film Pakeezah was made. They had already separated in 1964 after 12 years of married life.
