Today’s song is from the film Shankar Parvati-1943.
The film was made by Ranjit Movietone, Bombay. This was a rare occasion when Ranjit was making a Mythological movie, but to make use of the dancing skill of the film’s Heroine Sadhana Bose, it decided to make this film, in which there was plenty of scope for her dancing. The film was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi and the music was by Gyan Dutt. Songs were by Pt. Indra. The cast of the film included Sadhana Bose-as Parvati, Arun Ahuja-as Shankar, Kamala Chaterjee, Rewa Shankar, Narmada Shankar, Mahipal, Sulochana, Shyam and others.

“Mujhpe Bhi Toh Daalo Ek Nazar” sung by Asha Bhosle, penned by Varma Malik and composed by Sonik Omi.
“Maan Gaye Ustaad” (1981) was directed by Shibu Mitra for ‘Kapoor Films International, Bombay’. It was produced by S.K. Kapoor.

‘Aawaaraa Baadal’ (1964) was produced by Kailash Kapur and J P Sehgal under the banner of Amarjyot Films. There is some confusion as to who had directed the film – Kedar Kapoor or B R Ishara. Film’s poster has the name of Kedar Kapoor as director while IMDb and a few other websites mention the name of B R Ishara as the director. Film’s credit title does not mention the name of Kidar Kapoor but it mentions ‘dialogues written and directed by B R Ishara’. There may be some story behind this confusion. The cast included Ajit, Ragini, Indira Billi, Ramayan Tiwari, Jagdish Sethi, Leela Mishra, Niranjan Sharma, Mridula, Iftikhar, Dhumal, Indira Bansal, Tuntun, Sujata, Helen etc.

Mukesh and his Co-Singers –14
I have covered Mukesh’s songs composed by Sharda in my previous post.
I have also tried to cover many aspects of her career, but a few more details remain. A lot can be written about her association with Shankar and the various gossips and stories. But then, what is also known is that Sharda never revolted or reacted to these. She continued her life and career with whatever she came across. As such, a thought ran through my mind that it is better to stick to facts and statistics rather than the personal lives of artists.
We all have our likes and dislikes. I am not particularly fond of Sharda’s voice. But, then in many of her songs there is this unconventional, distinctive childish texture in her voice. In many songs that she sang this was a welcome change and did manage to capture the attention of music lovers. In an era where heroines were evolving into more mature roles and free expressions, such a voice suited their antics on the screen.

Who was the first woman music director in Indian films?
Well, to the unversed but having some intertest in HFM, Usha Khanna’s name would crop up in the mind. To the more learned ones, Saraswati Devi would be the answer. To experts, it would be Jaddanbai, the mother of legendary actress Nargis.
However, the credit goes to Ishrat Sultana aka Bibbo, who was the composer of Adl-e-Jahangir released in 1934. Jaddan Bai’s score for Talash-e-Haq was a year later in 1935.

The cast of this movie included Shobhana Samarth, Prem Adib, Jeewan, Prabha, Badri Prasad, Sankata Prasad, Shanta Patel, Kanta and others. This movie has eight songs as per Geet Kosh-Vol-II (1941-1950). Kavi Pradeep wrote the lyrics for the songs in this movie under the name of Miss Kamal. The singers’ names for all the individual songs are not mentioned against the songs of this movie. Hari Prasanna Das and Manna Dey were the two music directors for this movie. R. Gnanathesikan is an Indian musician, arranger, conductor, orchestrator, multi-instrumentalist, lyricist and playback singer popular for his works in Indian cinema, predominately in Tamil in addition to Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi films. Regarded as one of the most prolific composers, in a career spanning over forty-nine years, he has composed over 8,600 songs, provided film scores for about 1,523 feature films in nine languages, and performed in over 20,000 concerts. He is nicknamed “Isaignani” (the musical sage) and is often referred to as “Maestro”, the title conferred to him by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London. We also know him as “Ilaiyaraja”.
