NAYI KAHAANI (1943) was produced under the banner of Prabhat Film Company and directed by D D Kashyap. The star cast included Jairaj, Miss Ross, B Nadrekar, Shalini, Paresh Banerjee, Master Balakram etc. I had not heard of Miss Rose as an actress. A search on the website did not reveal much information about her except some basic information here. She was born as Rose Masbiah in Calcutta (Kolkatta) in a Jewish family. Her filmography indicates that she started working for Madan Theatres in Calcutta starting with the film ‘Hindustan’ (1932). Sometime around 1938, she shifted to Bombay (Mumbai) and joined Sagar Movietone. After the closure of Sagar Movietone, she seems to have become a freelance actor doing roles in films produced under the banners of Ranjit Movietone, National Studios and other film production banners in Bombay/Poona. During her career, she acted in 24 films. ‘Daasi Yaa Maan’ (1946) was her last film. She was a good singer and in a few films, she sang her own songs.

There was not much known about this movie, but thanks to Mr Arunkumar’s comments about this movie in another song of “Panghat”, we now have a good idea about the story of this movie as well as about the actors.

“Door Koi Gaaye. . .”

The voice of these words has now gone away very far from us, to probably sing at and regale the ‘mehfils’ in heavens.

“Aankh Ki Sharam” (1943) is quite an obscure movie by any standards. The little information that is available on internet suggests that the movie was directed by Balwant Bhatt and that the movie had Prithviraj Kapoor, Kaushalya, Agha, Trilok Kapoor, Moti, Gulab, Himalaya, Nalini Gupta etc in it.

In recent years, there has been a trend in Hindi film industry to make sequels of the box office hit films. Sequel films are said to be comparatively risk free as the success formula has already been tested. The earliest sequel film that I spotted on the internet was ‘Hunterwali Ki Beti’ (1943) which was supposed to be a follow-up of ‘Hunterwali’ (1935). I doubt whether the maker (Wadia brothers) of these two films ever thought in terms of a sequel but the story of the later film seems to be a follow up of the first film. Fearless Nadia (real name Marry Ann Evans) the first stunt heroine in the Indian film industry, John Cawas and Bhoman Shroff were part of the cast in both these films which were box office hits.
