THE VELVET MAGIC-TALAT DUETS
——————————

We are starting a New series-on Talat Mehmood’s film songs-especially the Duets. Talat songs are my favourites and I am in the company of a large number of music lovers on this issue. His soulful, sad and melodious songs and everlasting duets are heard all over the world even today. Some of his duets with Lata, Asha, Shamshad and Geeta are very famous, but not many people are aware that Talat sang a wide variety of duets with many singers. From Suprova Sarkar in Calcutta to Hemlata in Bombay,Talat’s range of singers included Mubarak Begum, Sudha Malhotra, Madhubala Jhaveri, Surinder Kaur, Suman Kalyanpur, Sulochana Kadam, Ameerbai Karnataki, Rajkumari etc among the females and Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Mukesh, Rafi, Balbir etc among the male singers.

This song will take you on a brief three minute journey of delightful music and singing.  Unknown and obscure gems such as this one, tell me that Hindi film music is poorer than what should have been; that there are less than 20 songs in Hindi films by this voice, her mainstay being Bangla films and Bangla non-film and religious songs.

Remembering Utpala Sen on the anniversary of her passing away (13th May).

Troika of the latest century singers – Mukesh, Rafi and Kishore – 1. Mukesh
——————————————————————————-

Sometime in the middle of April 2015, I had sent two write-ups to Atul ji and coincidentally, both these write-ups were on the songs sung by Mukesh. Atul ji sent me a reply saying that for the time being, he was avoiding posting songs of Mukesh as also of Rafi who are on their way to hitting centuries of their songs in the Blog. So he reckoned that my write ups on Mukesh’s songs may have to be held back for a few days. It was apparent that articles for the special events had already been planned.

A click on ‘Some stats’ page of the Blog revealed that while Mukesh was close to attaining his 700th song, Mohammed Rafi was only one short of his 2400th song in the Blog. A further glance on this page revealed that Kishore Kumar too was also very close to hitting his 900th song. So it was rare ‘celestial’ event like that of conjunction of planets Jupiter, Venus and Mars in the triangle shape which is expected on October 28, 2015. And all the three playback singers are nothing less than celestial stars along with Talat Mehmood and Manna Dey. There was an inner urge in me to pay tributes to the troika of playback singers on this unique conjunction of century songs. A thought tickled in my mind. What if I was to select special songs for the troika of playback singers on the occasion?

Mention of the name Mohammed Shafi brings to mind some timeless and peerless classics.  The immortal lorie song “Koi Pukare Dhire Se Tujhe” from ‘Mangu’ (1954), is a composition that is difficult to forget.

Remembering music director Mohammed Shafi on the anniversary of his passing away today (30 April).

Names of so many artists echo back to us from the decades past.  Names that stir up memories of wonderful songs, sometimes happy, sometimes melancholic, but always very endearing.  Their words, their sounds and their music continues to mesmerize us, even though the creators themselves have long ago taken their final journey.

Today is the anniversary of passing away of poet Aarzoo Lakhnavi, one of the stalwarts of the earlier decades of Hindi cinema.

The Many Colors of Love #29 – The Stories of Broken Hearts
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so wrote the scribe

ik dil ke tukde hazaar huye
koi yahaan gira koi wahaan gira
(‘Pyaar Ki Jeet’, 1948)

Walking the passages of love, one encounters enchanting emotions and charming music – heady feelings that will lure heart and mind into gardens with blossoming springs, chirping birds and fragrant flowers.  But the discerning eyes will also see, the pathways strewn with fragile fragments, unobtrusively lying by the side, that tell another story.  These are the delicate pieces of broken hearts that have suffered the pains of separation and the agony of desertion, an agony that is at times, too intense for the sensitive hearts to bear.  And the feelings inside are as if the heart has been torn asunder, crushed and broken into a thousand pieces.  And then thrown by the wayside.

Regulars may have noticed that posts in the blog have dwindled from yesterday. Well, yesterday was Valentine day and today (15 january 2015) was the world cup cricket match between India and Pakistan and I was busy on both these days. 🙂
