In 1980, I was in Delhi, fresh out of college, working for a firm that manufactured car parts. I stayed with my Aunt in Delhi, the rest of my family being elsewhere. My cousins were BIG music afficionados. They could sing beautifully and had an excellent taste in music.
I already loved the film music of 50s and 60s, so I was also well grounded in my musical tastes. My cousins helped me break out of my Lata/Asha/Rafi/Kishore mould and develop a taste for singers like Talat, Manna Dey, Begam Akhtar, Kumar Gandharva, Bhimsen Joshi and of course, Jagmohan.

I had listened to most of the audio clips of Begum Akhtar’s ghazals and other semi-classical songs uploaded on YT. She had rendered ghazals of many well known Urdu poets like Ghalib, Mir, Daagh, Momin Khan Momin, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Jigar Moradabadi, Firaq Ghorakhpuri, Behzad Lucknowi etc. In the later part of her singing carrier, she sang ghazals of the then emerging poets like Shamim Jaipuri, Shakeel Badayuni, Kaifi Azmi, Sudarshan Faakir, Amir Qabalbash etc. Jigar Moradabadi was one of her favourite poets. Begum Akhtar started singing his ghazal sometime in the second half of 30s when Jigar was already popular among the mushiara audience because of his captivating style of rendering his poetry. Because of his popularity, he was called ‘people’s poet’.

Atul Song-A-Day 10K Song Milestone Celebrations ––44 (Post number 9998)

How do you feel when a family member achieves something spectacular? Atul is my family, not only as a fellow blogger, but also because both of us started our professional career at the same Institute. This was a small, beautiful, self-contained place, tucked away in a town back of beyond, at the foothills of a hill (which was literally called पहाड़ी). This Institute was a British creation in 1927, with exceptional facilities thrown in: indoor swimming pool, indoor badminton court, squash court, tennis courts, football field, table tennis, billiards table, lounge, dark room for photography (the world was not digital then), and a huge golf course just outside the complex. Four years of our most exciting young days in this ambience, the life-style, and the traditions created a strong life-long bond with the Institute, and among the alumni. As I entered a few years earlier, I am especially delighted by the awesome achievement of my younger brother, The Incomparable Atul. As he completes the magical number of 10,000 posts I convey my heartiest congratulations to him and all the regular contributors who have made it possible.

THE JOY OF NFS (Song No. 7)
——————————
The word Non Film Song brings few names to mind immediately, like Jagmohan, Saigal, Kamala Jharia, Juthika Roy, Pankaj Mullick etc. I could never understand the reason and logic behind most NFS singers hailing from the Eastern part of India. Even Talat Mehmood went to Calcutta and sang all his famous NFS.

Searching for and locating the last few songs in a list always becomes a challenge, and the pace slows down considerably. In the process of completing the posting of all known songs of Mukesh till 1950, getting the last few remaining songs is turning out to be quite an effort. Today, I am uploading and posting this fabulous fun qawwaali from the 1950 film ‘Bijli’, which is sung by Mukesh and Shamshad Begum.

THE JOY OF NFS (Song No. 3)
—————————–
Believe it or not, but there is some kind of an unseen hand of Destiny that shapes Human life. In film industry, one can see very strange cases. Some people gracefully retire, when they are on Top of their careers and some have to retire because there is no work for them. Some people join the industry in a department of their choice, but Destiny changes their life and they end up working and succedding in an entirely different field of activity.

The Voice of Mukesh #62
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Returning once again to 1950, to capture this absolute riot of an eccentric qawwaali. Very clear that a bunch of young men are having a complete time out and the result of the fun being had is expressed in such outlandish verses that say
us waqt khushi se dil mera
aankhon mein utarne lagta hai
jab kaali surat par wo
makeup lagaa kar nakhraa karte hain
and
ae meri mohabbat ki motor
garij se nikal kar road pe aa

“Taara” (1949) was directed by RD Parineeja for a production house that went by the grandiloquent name of New Bombay Theatres production. The main cast of actors includes Shyama, Jawahar Kaul, Kuldip, Majnu, Nayantara, Chand Burque etc in it.
