Today’s song is from the film Guru Ghantal-1956.

There was a film in 1937 also with the same title. The story of both the films were on similar lines. But do you know what the meaning of the word Guru Ghantal is ? I did not know, but I found out from a Hindi-English dictionary, published in 1889. This was compiled by ” The Rev. T.Craven, M.A.”, in Lucknow. Many years ago, I had a habit of roaming on the streets of big cities like Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta or even smaller cities like Poona, Lucknow or Hyderabad, in search of second hand old and rare books. I found this dictionary of Hindi-English-Hindi and Urdu-English-Urdu words for sale in Lucknow. It was quite a thick book and occupied considerable space in my suitcase. The book is extremely useful and I have to use it very carefully because, being so old-135 years- its pages have become brittle and delicate. It is one of my prized possessions !

In his early career starting in Calcutta, he fell in love with a Bangla actress Latika Mullick. They got married on 20-2-1951. She was converted to Islam and was renamed Nasreen, who bore two children to Talat. As per a book by Manek Premchand, ‘Talat Mahmood – The Velvet Touch’, he sang 777 songs which included Hindi film songs, NFS and unreleased films etc. As per another source he sang 451 Hindi film songs from 259 Hindi films.

In this blog we have contributors who started watching movies in 1940s, some in 1950s, some in 1960s, some in 1970s and so on. When one reads their reminisceces about those days, we find that all these decades were vastly different from other decades. The movies made during any particular era catered to the then prevailing choices and preferences of the public. The genres of movies underwent change as time passed.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Dhola Maru’ (1956).

Hindi cinema is famous for presenting love stories of different kinds, types, hue and color based on imaginary, stolen, copied, made up or borrowed stories which end up as happy, sad or unexpected results. Not only Hindi, but most other languages too do the same.

Today’s song is from the film Guru Ghantal-1956.

I remember there was another film of the same title made in 1937, starring the stunt Hero Navinchandra Joshi and Gohar Karnataki – sister of actress/singer Amirbai Karnataki. The other name of that film was ‘Shareef Badmash’. I was wondering as to what was the real meaning of ” Guru Ghantal”. When I tried to find out, I learnt that Guru Ghantal means a Cheater, a very cunning or extra clever person, who is not what he claims to be !

Today’s song is from the film ‘Naqabposh’ (1956).

I am from that generation, which lived in a joint family. There used to be anything from 10 to 20 adult members in the household and everyone was assigned certain duties. As far as children were concerned, doing small jobs, following orders from elders, studying regularly and sleeping early was expected from them. One of the interesting points in our daily life used to be to listen to stories told by the old generation members like the grandfather and grandmother, before we went to sleep.
