Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

I have discussed as many as five songs from “Meri Soorat Teri Aankhen” (1963). They are all fantastic songs. And the interesting thing about these songs are, they are sung by different singers (more or less). Just imagine five outstanding songs in a movie sung by Rafi, Lata, Manna Dey, Mukesh ans Suman Kalyanpur !

When I saw the caption of this song, “tere pyaar mein dildaar” I thought I recognised this song. When I started to play it, it turned out to be a Lata Mangeshkar song, while I thought it might be a Shamshad Begum sing a composition by O. P. Nayyar from 50’s. It has a very old worldy feel to it. Actually it is from the Film “Mere Mehboob” and it is composed by Naushad. It goes without saying that it is written by Shakeel Badayuni. This is a kind of song, which keeps going on and on in the head long after you have heard it. I heard this song yesterday, after a very long time. It has three long stanzas in rapid speed. I made doubly sure that it was not posted. This should one of the last 2 songs from the film posted here, if earthmusic.net information is correct.

The moment we see the caption for this song “woh din yaad karo, woh din yaad karo ” the mind somehow produced the image of Mehmood and Shobha Khote singing this. I dont know how it happened to me, because I dont remember seeing this song before. I havent seen this movie either. This song was frequently played on vividh bharati. May be my mother had told me that this was a Mehmood -Shobha Khote song, and the information was stored somewhere in the deep recesses. Similar thing happened the other day with ‘Ajahun na aaye baalma saawan beeta jaaye”. This song from ‘Saanjh aur Savera’ has roughly the same team of Mehmood-Shobha, with only S. Kalyanpur replacing Lata. It is a classical, sort of jugalbandi song. When I saw the video I knew I had seen it on T.V. in “Chhaayageet ” or “Chitrahaar”.

I am totally overwhelmed with the response to my first write up. I want to thank Atul ji for posting it almost immediately. Thus encouraged I am now ready to do my second post. What could be the second step after a Lata solo ? No prizes for quessing, it has to be a Rafi solo. Mohammed Rafi solo by O.P.Nayyar to be precise. I would have preferred to have a solo song by S D Burman. I like O.P.Nayyar songs a lot, but S D Burman and Madan Mohan’s songs are my favourites. I have a few song by them lined up for discussion, Atul ji permitting.

The world of Hindi Classical Music has produced so many maestros both in vocal and in instrumental category. We have different maestros of different gharanas in the field of vocal music and same is the case in different instrument categories too. In the field of string instuments, we have sitar, veena, sarangi, sarod, and a few more. When we take the name or even think of sitar, the first name that comes to our mind is Pandit Ravi Shankar, whose real name is Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury.
