Think of Sheikh Mukhtar, the hero of so many ‘Dada’ and ‘Ustad’ movies, the proverbial angry young man of the 50s and 60s ‘B’ screen Hindi movies long before Amitabh got that tag in the 70s and 80s. Now think of the same he-man in a skirt dress and bob cut hair? And dancing the twist, and pat-a-cake, no less?

Though I have heard about movies called “Daag”, I was not aware of a movie called “Bedaag”. But yes, there is indeed one such movie that was released in 1965. Unlike “Daag”(1952) which had Dilip Kumar and Nimmi and “Daag” (1973) which had Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore,”Bedaag”(1965) did not have the reigning superstar of the day in its cast. This movie had Manoj Kumar and Nanda in lead roles.

Mainstream A grade movie makers confined themselves to movies on mainstream subjects- viz boy falling into love with girl and singing songs routine. The tales from mythology, Folk tales, arabian nights tales etc , which were such rich sources for stories were regarded as commercially risky propositions and as such were not ventured into. It was left to small budget small time B grade movie makers to make movies on these subjects.

I have discussed as many as five wonderful songs from “Waqt” (1965) in the past and yet this song was not one of them ! It just goes on to prove my point that this movie, in addition to being a multi starrer, was a musical blockbuster too.

“Waqt” (1965) was the first multi starrer Hindi movie of the golden era. It had several leading stars of the time namely Sunil Dutt,Sadhana,Raj Kumar,Sharmila Tagore,Shashi Kapoor,Balraj sahni,Achla Sachdev etc. The story line, that had the big family of Balraj Sahni separating in an earthquake, only to meet again towards the end, may look hackneyed now, but it was a novelty those days.In fact, it was the story of this movie that led to multi-starrers, as well as lost and found movies of 1970s.
