There are qawwali’s and than there are some qawwali’s. Or should I say there are qawwalis and than there are some filmi qawwalis by Roshan. To begin with I am not a very big fan or a knowledgeable person to talk about qawwali, hence this flippancy 😉 .

We all know that Madan Mohan left for his heavently abode during the making of this film “Laila Majnu”. The film released in 1976 and the music of this film was super hit and it is very popular to this day. The success that eluded him during his lifetime was only destined to be his after his death. I have been meaning to write down the lyrics of this films songs, as many of them are still to be discussed in this blog.

The Bangla novel “Parineeta” has inspired the making of several films in Bangla as well as in Hindi. Some of these movies had the same titles as the title of the novel. Then there were movies with different titles too, but based on the same story.

“Baalika Badhu” (1976) which means “Child Bride” was a remake of a Bangla movie of the same name which was made in 1950s and where Mausami Chatterji had played the title role. Mausami Chatterji, after looking at Rajni Sharma felt that Rajni Sharma looked much more immature (and thus more suitable) for the role of the child bride.

“Laila Majnu” was the debut film for Ranjeeta. For a number of year after I saw “Ankhiyon ke jharoke se” she was my favorite. I made it a point to see all her films, even those obscure movies with Mithun Chakravarty and music by Bappi Lahiri. I saw her films right upto “Rajput” (1981). Than she sort of dropped out of scene. There may have been a few more films, but I dont know. I dont remember how, but ” Ankhiyon ke jharoke se” I might have seen on T. V. only. ‘Rajput’ we had all seen in the theatre. That was a time when Amitabh Bachchan was in full flow. We would see all his films, not as soon as they released, but it was usually after the school exams were over and on the day of the last paper or the weekend. My father would book the tickets in advance. “Do aur Do paanch” onwards all films of Amitabh Bachhan were a must watch for all of us. They usually had a long run a theatre, unlike what happens now. If you want to see a movie in the theatre you have to do it within a few weeks. If dont manage to, then it will be gone from all the nearby movie halls.

“Naagin” (1954) is the original Naagin movie and this movie proved to be the definitive “Naagin” movie of all time. Its “been” music became the gold standard for the music of all snake movies.

Rajesh Khanna had become an overnight sensation in late 1960s and early 1970s.The kind of adulation that he enjoyed in his heydays was something indescribable and that could only be known to those who lived in that era. I was fortnate to have lived in that era and seen it first hand.

“Aarambh” (1976) is a recent movie by the standards of this movie which swas released at a time when I was at my precocious best as a follower of Hindi movies, but even I failed to notice anything about this movie at that time. So this movie must have been a big failure at the box office. This movie had a “star” cast of names like Rakesh pandey, Rama Vij, Kishore Kapoor, Vipin Gupta. These names did not ring any bells those days nor do they ring any bells today. In other words, movie with “star” cast was doomed to fail.
