Though this song is from a movie of 1970s, I had not heard this song before. This song is from “Bhala Maanus” (1979) and it had Randhir Kapoor and his would be sister in law Neetu Singh in lead roles. Kapoor Khaandaan men are known for figuring in this kind of casting. Here randhir Kapoor was at least acting opposite his (would be) sister in law, his uncles (Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor) in too acted opposite Babita (Randhir Kapoor’s wife) in several movies.

In 1970s, when Amitabh Bachchan ruled the roost, I found it perplexing that Amitabh Bachchan movies with silly plots did good business whereas movies which were truly good in my judgement failed at the box office. To my mind, movies like “The Great Gambler”, and “Deshpremi” weere better movies than say “Muqaddar ka Sikandar” and “Suhaag”, but that is not what the public thought at that time.

Rajshri productions had hit upon a sureshot formula for success in the decade of 1970s. They would make movies for a small target audience who wanted to watch love stories full of nice songs and heartwarming plots. This was a winning formula because love stories by definition required new faces ( and as such Rajshri Productions saved money on hiring big name actors). In these movies, story and music were the real stars and Rajshri productions had built up a small loyal audience for their movies.

“The Great Gambler” was an Amitabh Bachchan movie that was pronounced a damp squib when it was released in 1979. That came as a surprise to me because I found it a more watchable movie than many of the supposedly successful Amitabh Bachchan movies like “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar”, “Suhaag” etc.

“Saawan Ko Aane Do” was a musical blockbuster that contained one amazing song after another. Most of these songs were sung by Yesudas and this movie to my mind constituted the finest hour that Yesudas enjoyed in his singing career in Bollywood. The music director was Rajkamal whereas different songs were written by different and mostly little known lyricists.
