In Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra and in Goa, there used to be Devdasi (servants of God) customs under which select girls (especially trained singers and dancers) were attached to local temple for temple duties. Since they were regarded as wedded to the deity of the temples, they were expected to live a life of celibacy. They were supported by the patrons of the temple which included royalties. However, with the abolition of royalties, the Devdasi custom as envisaged in the beginning came under financial strain, forcing them to rely on rich patrons, sometime becoming their mistresse. The girls born out of such relationship were initiated into Devdasi customs.
In 1970, Jaywant Dalvi, a Marathi novelist, playwright and journalist, who was from the South Konkan region, published his novel, ‘Mahananda’ highlighting the burning issues in Devdasi customs in the Konkan region of Maharashtra as evolved over a period of time, now almost extinct. The story is about a city-based college lecturer, Babulnath (Babul for short). He while on a visit to his native village, falls in love with Mahananda (Mannu for short), a daughter born out of Devdasi custom. However, her mother opposes their marriage as Mahananda is destined to serve the temple as Devdasi. It is a tragic love story which is doomed from the beginning due to societal pressures and superstitions resulting in the emotional turmoil for the affected lovers. The end result is that Mahananda is betrayed by her own mother due to her superstitions and later by Babul due to his timid nature though he remains unmarried.

‘Imaandaar’ (1987) was produced by Surendra Pal Chaudhary and Sarla Sandhu and was directed by Sushil Malik. The cast included Sanjay Dutt and Farah Naaz in the lead roles supported by Pran, Sumeet Saigal, Satyen Kappu, Vikas Anand, Rohan Kapoor, Ranjeet, Mehmood, Om Prakash, Birbal, Chandrashekhar, Sudhir Dalvi, Dinesh Hingoo, Shammi, Shashi Kiran, Mehmood Jr., Ram Sethi, Subbiraj etc.
The film was a Prakash Mehra presentation which indicates as to who was behind this film. Sushil Malik, the director of the film was Prakash Mehra’s assistant director. The film’s producer, Surendra Pal Chaudhary was one of the partners of Prakash Mehra Productions. Another connection of this film with Prakash Mehra is his trademark film story revolving around a homeless, abandoned and orphaned lead actor, like in ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ (1978), ‘Jwaalaamukhi’ (1980), ‘Laawaaris’ (1981), ‘Sharaabi’ (1984) etc. In a way, Prakash Mehra was replicating his own story who was an orphan child having lost his mother and thereafter his father abandoning him when he was 8 year of age.

Hullo Atuldom
Followers of this blog may have noticed my inclination towards combining anniversaries of celebrities. That is, I try to find songs where two or more celebs, who’s birth or death anniversaries fall on the same dates or adjacent dates, are featured. I must admit that finding songs of some combinations are difficult as the concerned actors or actresses may have been in the same film but may have not even shared screen-time or screen-space, so finding a together song is a tall order.
I am in luck this time; for which I shall GOOGLE.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) Part-2 –post-4 (1987)
(Celebrating Pancham’s 86th Birth Anniversary 27.06.2025 – 8)
——————————————————————————————————
Today 27 th June 2025 is the eighty-sixth birth anniversary of the genius music director Rahul Dev Burman. We would have been celebrating his eighty-seventh birthday today had he been alive today. It is said that Pancham’s music ruled the roost through the seventies and then began to lose ground from the eighties. It was not because the quality of his songs went down. Rather it was because the taste of music lovers changed. There were less takers for his kind of music as the 1980s wore on.

My first introduction to Ajay was way back when. We met at Golcha, one of the (then) premier cinema halls situated in the Daryaganj main shopping area in Delhi. This place is technically in Old Delhi (or Delhi-6, as it is recognized now by film buffs). Golcha used to be what maybe Maratha Mandir used to be in Bombay. People would visit simply to see the place.
