Tera muskuraanaa banaa ik fasaanaa

Recently reader Sudhir likened my knack of discovering musical gems to going into a coal mine and stumbling upon diamonds. It is a good comparison, and I in fact feel that the likelihood of coming up with musical diamonds in the metaphorical musical coal mine is far more, seeing how many of them I discover on a regular basis. I in fact liken it to walking on a beach, and coming across these gems lying undiscovered.

“Pyaase Panchhi” (1960) is a rather B grade movie where Mehmood was the hero opposite Ameeta. Going by the fact that Mehmood subsequently made his mark not as a hero but as a comedian, it appears to me that this movie may not have done well at the box office.

Shammi Kapoor made his debut in early 1950s and for the first few years of his career he was largely a nobody. In his movies, he would try to ape the mannerisms of his elder brother Raj Kapoor.
It was with “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” (1957) that Shammi Kapoor discovered his true self. It was in this movie that we first saw Shammi Kapoor look and act like the Shammi Kapoor that we so love and adore to this day.

“Dekh Kabira Roya” (1957) was a movie made with lesser actors, and I have no idea how the movie fared at the box office, but today this movie is regarded as a musical blockbuster.

It is difficult to imagine how Mukesh (of dard bhare naghme fame) would sound on Mehmood (known for loud comedy). Well, stereotyping aside,we actually have instances of Mukesh singing for Mehmood.

“Chhote Nawaab” (1961) was R D Burman’s debut movie. He was given this break by Mehmood, and the rest, as they say, was history.
