Normally it is believed that old songs are obscure songs and new songs are better known songs. But that is not always the case. I find that several recent songs (anything created in 1970s and later are recent by the standards of this blog. 😀 ) have been forgotten in double quick time.

When one listens to the songs of the golden era, one realises that the overall quality of the songs was quite high. Not just the big name music directors, even small time music directors were creating quality stuff. The only difference between big names and small names was marketability, otherwise qualitywise, even music directors confined to B and C grade movies were just as good as the A grade music directors.

Hindi movie scenario was so rich during the golden era that great music composers almost grew on trees. Some of them went on to become legends, but there were many great composers that failed to land sufficient number of assignments that their talents merited.

Rajesh Khanna, who was born on 29th December 1942, made his mark as a superstar in Hindi movies sometime in the second half of 1969, when “Aradhana” (1969) was released. This movie gave him an identity and a persona which became his trademark.

Here is a song from “Mahaan” (1983). This is a wonderful sentimental song which appears in the movie twice and it is sung by different singers on both the occasions.

The charm of Hindi films for me began from the time I began watching them avidly. The charm lay in those unique features of the Hindi film; multi-starrer, great fight scenes, action-packed, zingy songs and scintillating dialogues. If this was coupled with a lost-and-found brother/friend plot, with messages on religious harmony, and with good triumphing over evil, what more could a teenager want!
