“Paayal Ki Jhankaar” (1980) was a Rajshri Productions presentation, which was directed by Satyen Bose. It had a cast of Komal Mahuwakar (before this we had seen her in ‘Dream Girl’ as Baby Komal), Alankar (first role where he was not credited as Master Alankar), Surinder Kaur (I think this was her debut), Arun Kumar, Shail Chaturvedi, C.S. Dubey, Sudha Shivpuri, and a few more known & unknown faces who comprise the brigade of character artists in Hindi films.

“Mashaal”(1950) was directed by Nitin Bose for Bombay Talkies. The movie was based on a Bankimchant Chattopadhyay story called “Rajni”. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Summovie itra Devi, Kanu Roy, Ruma Guha, S Nazir, Moni Chatterji, Zal Merchant, Nana Palsikar, Neelam, Gauri Devi, Niharika Devi, Sati Devi, Shivraj, Arun Kumar, samar Chatterji, Krishnkant, Cuckoo, Dubey etc in it.

“Basant” (1942) was a Bombay Talkies production. It was directed by Amiya Chakraborty. The movie had Ulhas, Mumtaz Shanti, Mumtaz Ali,Pramila, Jagannath, Suresh, Baby Mumtaz (Madhubala), Kanu Roy, Pithawala etc in it.

Punar Milan was made in 1940 by Bombay Talkies.THe movie as well as its songs were well known during its time. Music lover like Arunji would know how famous were the songs. Though 1950 was “only” six decades ago, it looks like that was an entirely different world altogether from what it is today. For one, things were much simpler and un complicated and moreover, people seemed to have all the time in the world at their disposal. Imagine riding on a slow moving bullock cart and taking entire day to cover a distance of may be 15 miles, that one can now cover in a few minutes. Yes, one used to measure distances in miles those days.

Judging by the songs of the movie, I can guess that this movie “Jhoola” (1941) was a highly entertaining movie. The movie was a romantic comedy movie and the movie in fact served as the inspiration for later movies viz “Padosan” (1968). How inspired “Padosan” was from “Jhoola” (1941) could be gauged from the fact that the lyrics of the iconic song Ek chatur naar karke singaar of Padosan(1968) is inspired from the song Ek chatur naar karkar singaar of “Jhoola” (1941).

In the past, I have discussed a couple of songs from “Basant” (1942) which is quite an important movie in the annals of Hindi movies, because this movie introduced Madhubala, who then was a young kid and was credited as baby Mumtaz.
