Remembering Kishore Kumar on his 91st Birth Anniversary :

teri gali main aata sanam
naghma wafa ka gaata sanam
tujhse suna na jaata sanam
phir aa jidhar aaya hoon magar
ye kehne main deewaana
khatm bas aaj ye wehshat hogi
aaj rusva teri galiyon mein muhabbat hogi
mere mehboob

Abhas Kumar Ganguly (born 4 August 1929 – 13 October 1987), became the famed Kishore Kumar of Hindi film world. Being a Bengali but born and brought up in hindi heartland and settling down to work in Bombay film industry to follow the footsteps of big brother, must have helped form a cosmopolitan outlook in his attitudes. I have just read the Wikipedia page on Kishore Kumar and found it enlightening in many ways. Some of the eccentric behavior described in the page, are funny and not so funny at the same time.

Reading the detailed page has confirmed many of my conceptions about Kishore Kumar. Chief among them being the fact that S. D. Burman, had a great role to play in shaping him as a super playback singer. For a long time through 50’s and 60’s it is apparent that he only ever gave playback for Dev Anand. He was making films, acting as hero and character roles, singing for himself, composing songs for his own films etc. etc. 50’s and 60’s were the most productive decades for Dev Anand, but he was singing songs on screen with the total range of singers, Rafi, Kishore, Hemant Kumar, Talat Mehmood and even Mukesh. If Manna De also sang for Dev Anand during this time, I don’t know off hand. Even in Navketan films, the songs were divided among Rafi and Kishore, a few were by Hemant Kumar too early on. So it is understandable that 70’s and early 80’s is Kishore Kumar’s most productive period, after he was convinced by RDB to seriously concentrate on playback singing. Even than he was reportedly choosy about the actors for whom he sang.

Kishore Kumar also has a distinction of being the singing star and having enjoyed playback by Rafi Sahab. Only other singer to have this distinction is G. M. Durrani.

Some of the sad melancholy songs of Kishore Kumar are my favourite sad songs which I have listed in another post. The above quoted song “mere Mehboobqayamathogi” is one such song, the lyrics of which were written in a book of songs I used to keep in my childhood.

I had short listed the solo from “Sanam Teri Qasam” – Sheeshe ke gharon mein dekho to patthar dil wale baste hain”, but I found that song a bit depressing. So I shifted to another happy sounding song.

I am presenting this peppy, feel good song from the film “Bezubaan”(1982). It’s a party song, where Shashi Kapoor is singing in praise of his wife Reena Roy and counting his blessings. It is a solo song by Kishore Kumar, witten by Ravindra Rawal and composers are Raam-Laxman. The entire cast of the film is present in this gathering. The party is moving from indoors to outdoors and indoors again while Shashi Kapoor is so shaky and imbalanced with happiness keeps falling down and dropping things 🙂 🙂 . The details of the film are available on imdb site. The songs were quite good in this film especially the song “harek jeewan hai ek kahaani par ye sachchayi sab ne na jaani”, story- telling solo by Lata Mangeshkar.

Song-Tere jaisa koi khoobsoorat nahin (Bezubaan)(1982) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Ravindra Rawal, MD-Raam-Laxman

Lyrics(As per audio)

Part I (Happy version)

———————————

Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin
Ye mera chhota sa jahaan
Aisa swarg hai kahaan
mera chhota sa jahaan
Aisa swarg hai kahaan
Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin

Sooraj chaand taare gagan ke
Jaise raushni dene chamke
Yoon hi teri bindiya ke dam se
Meri duniya din raat damke
Sooraj chaand taare gagan ke
Jaise roshni dene chamke
Yunhi teri bindiya ke dam se
Meri duniya din raat damke
Tere hansne se achcha mahurat nahin
Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin

Main bhi aaj yeh maanta hoon
Kal tak jo yeh duniyaa thhi kehti
Jag mein har safal aadmi ke
Peechhe ek aurat hai rehti
Main bhi aaj yeh maanta hoon
Kal tak jo yeh duniyaa thhi kehti
Jag mein har safal aadmi ke
Peechhe ek aurat hai rehti
Munh chhupaane ki koyi zaroorat nahin
Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin

Kitna mujhe tujhpe yaqeen hai
Hamdam tujhe kehna hai mushkil
Itna tujhe kehta hoon bas main
Tujh bin zinda rehna hai mushkil
Kitna mujhe tujh pe yaqeen hai
Hamdam tujhe kehna hai mushkil
Itna tujhe kehta hoon bas main
Tujh bin zinda rehna hai mushkil
Nainon mein bin tere koyi moorat nahin
Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin
Ye mera chhota sa jahaan
Aisa swarg hai kahaan
mera chhota sa jahaan
Aisa swarg hai kahaan
Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin

———————————

Part II (Sad version)

———————————

Itna mujhe tujh pe yaqeen hai
Hamdam tujhe kehna hai mushkil
Itna tujhe kahta hoon bas main
Tujh bin zinda rehna hai mushkil
Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin

“Bezubaan”(1962) was directed by Ram Kamlani for Gope Productions, Bombay. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Nirupa Roy, David, Helen, Vishwa Mehra, Shammi, Ishwar Lal, Paro, Jamal, Genius, Umesh Sharma, Ramesh Rai, Baby Anita, Kathana, Prem Sagar, Rammurti, Hamid, Majnu etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Two of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the third song from “Bezubaan”(1962) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Lata. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.

Picturisation shows Nirupa Roy with Baby Anita, who have been thrown out of home by Ashok Kumar. The kid, too young to realise what is going on, wonders why her father is not with them. Nirupa Roy tries to put the kid to sleep by singing this “story” song which also doubles up as a lullaby.
