Hindi film industry has given rise to several controversies, some of them are settled, some are forever a question mark and some controversies come up again and again with the slightest of provocation. The autobiography of C Ramchandra( Majhya Jeevana chi Sargam-copyright by Yeshwant Ramchandra Chitalkar) is somewhat disappointing. Its major part is spent on describing various exploits of C Ramchnadra with different women. Normally one expectes that the writer would focus on his worldly achievements and creations, which gave him name and fame, but on this count this book is a failure. Not that it is totally bereft of such things, but considering his musical successes during the Golden Era, one feels deprived of more discussions on music related topics.

Recently I had mentioned the name of Shirish Kanekar, a writer on HFM of yore. He writes in Marathi. He has a photographic memory and hundreds of anecdotes about songs, singers, composers, directors and everybody in films. He has written about 30 odd books, most of which are highly readable.

Autobiography(AB) is a type of literature which has a limited, selective and captive readership. Only those who are connected with the writer, personally or professionally will be interested in reading it. It can not have a widespread readership. A Doctor’s AB may be read by members of his profession or by those who are connected personally with him. Others who are unconnected may not even buy that book.

Shirish Kanekar is my favourite author in Marathi. He started his career as a journalist in Indian Express and later worked for many publications. He writes on Cricket and Old films-actors and music. He knows many cricketers as well as many yeateryear actors, composers and has interviewed them. He has written 20-25 books so far and also done several Stand up shows on cricket and Films in many countries.

C RAMCHANDRA is generally considered a rebel amongst the composers of his times. He is the one, who, in the fifth decade of the 20th century itself brought full fledged western music variety in Hindi songs. At the same time he composed soft and extremely melodious songs based on various Ragaas also. He took Lata Mangeshkar to the pinnacle where she remained, later, on her own merit, for a long period. Very few composers have exhibited such variety in their music. It was a fact that many of his films were sold merely on the strength of his music.

C Ramchandra started his career as an independent Music Director with a Tamil film- ” Jayakodi” ( Flag of Victory ).
Very strange indeed ! A Marathi composer, who spent his entire life in Hindi cinema Industry, started with a Tamil film !!

I was a bit surprised to note that Mohammed Rafi had to struggle for nearly 5 years to establish him as one of the leading male playback singers in Hindi film industry. It is said that he recorded his first song for a Punjabi film as early as 1942. It took him another 2 years to get his first song in a Hindi film ‘Pahele Aap’ (1944), a duet with Shyam thus beginning his long lasting collaboration with Naushad. It took another year for him to get an opportunity to sing his first solo song ‘ae dil-e-nakaam tamanna’ in ‘Hamara Sansaar’ (1945) followed by ‘teraa khilonaa toota baalak’ in ‘Anmol Ghadi’ (1946), the latter one under the baton of Naushad.

C Ramchandra can be easily called the King of Anokhe Bol songs, though he is not who started it.
The first song having Anokhe Bol or meaningless words was composed by the Grand old music Director Madhulal Damodar Master in film ” Hatimtai I “-1933 and the Lyricist was G.R.Sethi who was the film’s director also. The song was ‘ Donga donga dum dum daka adam boka masnam maka’.
