When it comes to music of a movie, it is the music director that gets much of the credit for the song ( alongwith the singer and the lyricist, of course). It is often the assistant music director/ arranger who is often does the real work and still he remains unsung.

Ye dil na hota bechaara

Once S D Burman went to watch the English movie “Bridge on the River Kwai”. There was a musical tune in that movie which Burman da liked very much. He continued to whisle that song the whole day and he made a tune inspired by that music. That tune was used in the song “ye dil na hota bechaara” in the movie “Jewel Thief”.

Most leading heroes had their standard playback singers. Thus Raj Kapoor had Mukesh, Shammi Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar had Rafi, Vishwajeet had Hemant Kumar, Sunil Dutt had Mahendra Kapoor ( in B R Chopra movies) etc.

In late 1950s and early 1960s, there were quite a few movies with “Bambai” in their title. Thus we had titles like “Bambai ka chor” and “Mr X in Bombay” those days.

The word “Chaand” and its derivatives were quite common in Bollywood movies till 1970s, after which man reached the moon and mankind ( including Bollywood lyricists) would no longer look at “Chaand” with the same fascination.

Not too many people know much about a movie called “Baarish”. It was a movie released i 1957 and it starred Dev Anand and Nutan.
