People these days lament about the degradation in the quality of Hindi movie music today. And as example of exemplary music, the cite the eras of 1950s to 1970s. But I tell you, when I was growing up in that era, then I felt exactly the same way- that 1970s had seen a degradation in the quality of songs vis a vis songs of late 1960s.

“Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiyaa” (1966) is a movie that is full of sensational songs but these songs were criminally wasted thanks to the boring and painful plot. Even leaving the brain behind (recommended for watching Hindi movies) does not work. One can enjoy these songs only when the characters on whom the song is picturised enjoy it, seeing that it is a romantic song. If the place had 30 plus movie halls then it was a A class city etc.

In the picturisation of this song, Dharmendra has just realised that Hema Malini is in love with him. Having made this discovery, Dharmendra jumps up and down all over the place, singing this joyous song, and Hema Malini is naturally embarrased at this public display of Dharmendra’s love for her.

One reason why the songs of the golden era live in our memory is the lyrics which were soul of these songs. Secondly, the singers sand these songs with involvement and passion, and thirdly, the music of these songs created just the right ambience for the mood of the song.
