Though 1970 was a decade when action movies had begun to dominate, there were small time movie makers who produced small budget family entertainers sans fights and action. Rajshri Productions, the Basus ( Basu Bhattacharya and Chatterji), Hrishikesh Mukherji and some South India producers were the ones who produced such movies.

Though these movies lacked stars most of the time, but the music in these movies was of a high quality. Such movies and their music created their own niche market.

“Kabuliwala”, a movie based on Rabindranath Tagore’s moving story of the same name, was significant in many respects. The fact that Bollywood adopted stories of great writers was praiseworthy. The other fact that the story faithfully followed the story was also nice.

Boat songs, where the singer sings about maajhi(boatman) and the boat were the speciality of S D Burman as a singer and music director. But here, his son R D Burman has created music that his father must have been proud of .

And the voice of Kishore Kumar is nothing short of magical. It has been chronicled that the people present at the time of recording of this song were so much moved by Kishore Kumar’s singing that they cried. Kishore Kumar’s voice full of pain and pathos had that effect on them.

Simple plain words can sometimes create good lyrics. And Gulzar was one lyricist who could create magical lyrics out of simple words, and here is a wonderful example of his lyrical wizardry. Follow the lyrics carefully, and one notices how well they express the feelings of joy that the lady is experiencing.

Lata has sung this song with some passion, and R D Burman has suitably tempered the exuberance of his music.

What makes a song tick and makes it hummable? Here let me talk about just this song. If you have not seen the movie or the visuals of the song, you can still visualise the theme by listening to the lyrics and the tune. One can make out that the two persons are on a hill station and are yearning for those days when they had time and the life went on at a leisurely pace. Listen to the lyrics, and listen to the music, both go hand in hand like the two actors ( Sanjiv Kumar and Sharmila Tagore) enacting the scene, at perfect harmony with each other.
