Dev Saab – the phenomena continues.  With coming newer generation, it may fade away.  But there is still many more generations to go before that can happen.

Remembering Dev Saab on the anniversary of his birth today – 26th September.  He would have been 92 years young today.  And I am sure, he is, wherever he maybe now.

एक सागर है, आवाज़ का, जिसमे डूबे ही रहने को मन करता है।

These are times to be thankful.  And to feel blessed.  That we are living in the times when this treasure of music was created.  We continue to search and explore and continue finding gems, obscure gems, unheard gems, lost gems – songs that were once created with a lot of enthusiasm and zeal.  Yes, these are times to feel blessed that these gems are available and accessible. I am really anxious about the day, and shrink away from the thought – the day when we will have no more songs of Rafi Sb to post. Life will continue, no doubt.  It has a relentlessness built into it.  But then, we will be carrying with us, an emptiness – that there are no more “unheard” songs to search for.

Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 7
—————————————————–

I remember such sellers from my travels in childhood.  It was a time when intercity travel of half a day or less would be a journey by bus, and a longer journey would be by train.  Both my maternal and paternal families are spread out over the Punjab and Himachal areas north of Delhi – Chandigarh, Simla, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar.  All these cities being less than a day’s journey, our travels were generally by the intercity state transport buses. Any other travels, like visiting other metropolitan cities which are all south of Delhi, would generally be by train.  During my school years, travel to visit family was quite a regular affair, once or twice a year during vacation breaks.  Other travels, to places like Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and Bangalore were less frequent.

Seven years, nineteen films, a celebration wedding that was the talk of the tinsel town, and then handing over the torch to the next generation.  That about sums up the career of the once beauty star – Babita.  Greetings to her on the 67 birthday today (20th April).

The short lived career, however, was a scintillating one.  She appeared opposite to practically all the top heroes in the industry at that time, and did a number of musical romantic films, as could have be the draw for the young and beautiful lady.  It is known that GP Sippy first offered the role of Sheetal, the young widow with child, for his upcoming film ‘Andaz’ (1971) to Babita. After some in-family discussions, she turned down the role, possibly considering that it might work to be a negative for her career.  Another youngster, Hema Malini, took on the role.  Hema Malini had made her debut in 1969, three years after Babita’s debut (‘Dus Lakh’, 1966).  Both are of the same age though, having the same year of birth.  The trajectories of their subsequent careers and lives, tell their own stories.

We have discussed more than 11000 songs by now. I had not thought even in my wildest of dreams that we will one day arrive at such a figure. My view was that we will have about 2500 songs in the blog and then we will not songs left to be discussed. 🙂

In the second half of 1960s and the first half of 1970s, Shashi Kapoor was the busiest actor in the industry.  After his struggle years of early 1960s, and riding on the success of films like ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ (1965), he started getting offers in such huge numbers, and because he did not turn down any one, there was a time when he was booked for almost 5 to 7 years at a single stretch.
