Greetings all readers, for the celebration of the festival of Raksha Bandhan, or Raakhi as it is more popularly known.

Today is the full moon day, i.e. the last day of the month of Shravan (Saawan) of the Hindu calendar. Traditionally, the monsoon rains have already set in. The fields that were ploughed and upturned, after the last harvest and before the arrival of rains, are now fully prepared for sowing. For the farmers and their families, this is the auspicious beginning of the sowing season – another crop to tend to, another harvest to look forward to. In most of North India, the farmers will start to sow the wheat crop from this day.

This song under discussion is from the film “Birha ki Raat”(1950). Another song I discussed from this film the other day “bahut purdard hai aye sunnewaale”” starts with the sh’er :

jahaan mein jin ki ummeedon ke bede
paar hote hain
woh khush qismat hazaaron mein kahin
do chaar hote hain

‘Beda paar lagaana’ is a saying in hindi/urdu meaning ‘achieving the ambition or reaching ones destination. The word ‘Beda’ literally means a “Fleet of big ships”. The opposite of this saying in a curse “Beda garq ho teraa” or a lament “beda garq hogayaa”. “Garq’ is drowning in water. The special thing about these sayings or muhaavra’s which are used in urdu/hindi, is that they can be used backwards, forwards, in singular/plural,past/present tense, negative/positive and in varied situation they can be applied.

This movie “Birha ki Raat” (1950) had Dev Anand and Nargis playing lead roles, which is a rare occurance. Video links are not available on youtube for the songs of this film, so we make do with only the audio links. Only one song, a duet by Rafi-Lata is posted in the blog so far. When I heard this Rafi solo “bahut purdard hai ae sunnewaalon daastan meri” for the first time, it touched me. Then on second hearing I found it to be a very endearing ghazal.

If a movie title has nouns like “Behan”,”Bahu”, Bhabhi” etc in it preceded by adjectives like “Badi”, “Chhoti” etc then one can safely conclude that sacrificing characters lie ahead in the movie and unless one is masochistic in nature, one needs to steer clear of such movies.

Regulars of this blog may be wondering why I have discussed only one post today and then nothing ! The reason is, today my wife has all the time to supervise over me and sitting at the computer is proving out to be difficult for me. I somehow managed to post one writeup today when she was not looking. Now it is afternoon and she has gone out for her favourite pastime, viz shopping. I refuse to have anything to do with shopping so I have dropped her (and the daughter) to a shopping complex and come back. Assuming that they will be there for three hours, I need to make the most of these three hours to make up for lost time. 🙂

Today is 23rd March, a day that is remembered as the day of martyrdom of the three young and brave sons of this earth, Bhagat Singh, Sukh Dev and Raj Guru. In 1931, the supreme sacrifice that these young men in their twenties chose to make for the cause of our nation, became an inspiration for the subsequent generations – a ideal that still arouses the patriotic fervor.
