Popular wisdom about Sajjad Hussain is that he last composed for a Hindi movie in 1963. Fortunately, that is not the case. He, despite his troubles with movie makers continued to work till late 1970s. his last movie as a music director was in 1977 and this movie was “Aakhri Sajdaa” (1977). The star cast for this movie includes Maya Sinha, Tabrez, Murad, Veena, Jagdeep, Helen, Husn Banu etc.

This is a gem of a ghazal presented in Mujra style. Once again, very beautiful, almost semi classical composition. The words are lovely, and the music is just wonderful. As with the other song picturised on Helen, the quality of on screen situation and picturization is average. However, the song is mesmerizing, if one listens only to the audio, without any visual distractions.

It is popularly believed (and faithfully reproduced by most sites copying from each other) that “Rustam Sohrab” (1963) was the last movie of Sajjad Hussain as a music director. Fortunately for music lovers, Sajjad Hussain was active even later and he kept getting assignments till 1970s, even if they were few and far between.

“Shankar Hussain” (1976) is a movie which has been forgotten with time though it is just over three decades old and is therefore of recent vintage by the standard of this blog. I recall that one of its songs became quite popular and in fact this song is regarded as a classic now. I am talking about the song Kahin ek maasoom naazuk si ladki which is a fantastic song sung by Rafi.

Though this song talks of “Chanda”, “raat” etc, which are found in “Chaayaageet” songs, this song from “Chhoo Mantar” sounds more like a dance song. After all, O P Nayyar is the music director of this song, and his music tended to be dance music. In “Chaayageet” songs, we do not expect the lovelorn protagonist to dance, he/ she is just expected to sing in a slow tempo. 😉
