Dev Anand, who left for heavenly abode yesterday (3th december 2011) in London, was a legend among legends in the annals of Indian movie industry. He started his career in 1940s as an actor and quickly went on to become one of the big three heroes of 1950s, other two being Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. Dev Anand typically played suave, urban, dashing and stylish characters in his movies. He got his first break in Prabhat theatre’s “Hum Ek Hain” (1946). He got his big break in “Ziddi” (1948) and that enabled him to get a foothold in the industry. Soon, he set up his own production house, viz Navketan too.

“Tumhaare Liye” (1978) is a recent movie by the standards of this blog, and it came at a time when I was fully awrae and alive to the Hindi movies that were being released those days. But I was not much aware of this movie. So it shows that this movie was one of those boring art movies that most movie goers would not touch with a barge pole.

This song from “Joru Ka Bhai” (1955) is sung by Lata. The lyrics of this song sound similar to a Talat Mehmood song from this movie, but the lyrics are different and that has forced me to treat this song as a different song and not as a multiple version song.

In this blog, I treat the number of songs discussed as the same as the number of posts. For instance, as of now, it is mentioned that the blog has 4876 songs. But it is not true. It means that this blog had 4876 posts. Multiple version songs, where songs with same lyrics are sung by different artists are discussed in one post in this blog, but they are really different songs. If one begins to count the number of songs that way (which is the actual way of counting songs), then this blog has already has already discussed over 5000 songs. It is for the sake of convenience and to avoid duplication of work that such multiple version songs are discussed in one post.

In the golden era of Hindi movies, the storyline of most movies were of the tried and tested nature. Few movie makers would try to be different, because it meant takling risks and such risks rarely paid dividends at the box office. Still, every movie maker (and the actors working in these movies) claimed that his/her forthcoming movie was “different”.

“Mujhe Jeene Do” (1963) is a movie with a moving message. It was about the lives of bandits. What lies in store for the bandits who want to get reformed and join the mainstream of society, with same hopes and aspirations for their kids like normal people ? This movie is a moving picturisation on this issue.

In Hindi movies, actors are often seen singing in front of a gathering while seated on a grand piano. This to my mind was rather unrealistic. For one, there may not have been too many households owning spacious houses with huge hall where such grand pianos were kept. Secondly, it is humanly not possible to play the piano and sing a song simultaneously.

For all Indians born post-1947 or maybe a decade later, it is difficult to contemplate life in pre-independence times. We are now so used to being an independent nation that we do not always value what we have. What our freedom-fighters fought for.
