CH Atma, a voice that is soft and slow, a voice that possesses a very deep baritone, a voice that seems as if a guttural sound is passing through very deep caverns, a gravelly sound coming from somewhere deep inside his being. A voice that is oh so unique in the lineup of singers in the industry.

I have experienced this many times, and maybe you too could have experienced the same. The music of his songs has the quality to transport the listener to another place, another time. Just close your eyes and relax – and listen to a song like “Parbaton Ke Pedon Par Shaam Ka Baseraa Hai”(film ‘Shagoon’, 1964). The flowing waves of music will transport the listener to a vista of hills and trees with the sun slowly descending the western horizon. Or the song “Bahaaro, Mera Jeevan Bhi Sanwaaro” (film ‘Aakhri Khat’, 1966). Or the song “Apne Aap Raaton Mein Chilmanein Sarakti Hain” (film ‘Shankar Hussain’, 1976). Or the song “Simti Hui Ye Ghadiyaan” film ‘Chambal Ki Kasam’, 1979). Or the song “Aa Jaa Re Aa Jaa Re O Mere Dilbar Aa Jaa”(film ‘Noorie’, 1979). Or the quintessential gem “Shaam-e-Gham Ki Kasam, Aaj Ghamgeen Hain Hum” film ‘Footpath’, 1953).

The first time we hear of Khayyaam as a music director is in the 1951 film, ‘Pyaar Ki Baaten’. In this film, he shares the honors of music composition with Bulo C Rani. But certainly, this is not his first film as a music director. He has been active in the industry since 1948, albeit has was using a different name. In 1947-48 when he came to Bombay looking for opportunities as a music director, some producers and friends suggested to him not to use his original name, and so he adopted a pseduonym – Sharma ji. Under this name he composed music for three films, before reverting to his original name with the film, ‘Pyaar Ki Baaten’.

1960 saw the release of the famous film ‘Bambai Ka Babu’. With Dev Anand and Suchitra Sen in the lead and music by SD Burman, this film did well to stay put in the memory of the viewers and listeners. In the same year, another ‘Bambai’ film was released, that seemed to have disappeared without making any impact, and there is nothing one hears about it.

The film ‘Mohabbat Isko Kehte Hain’ from 1965 is simply a treasure house of wonderful songs. And so it is, given that the lyrics are coming from the pen of Majrooh Sb and the music is created by Khayyaam Sb, the genius of the understated melody who has remained always by the banks of the mainstream. Whatever may be the film, his creations are simply fantastic.

Recently, I came across a non-filmy song on the internet, sung by Talat Mehmood which happened to be his first disc cut in 1941 for HMV. The mukhda of the song was
sab din ek samaan nahin thha
ban jaaunga kyaa se kyaa main
iskaa to kuchh dhyaan nahin thha

“Kabhi Kabhi” (1976) was a movie that I became aware of when its title song began to play on radio. I found the title song quite antiquated in its tune. Those were the days when anything not sung by Kishore Kumar or not composed by R D Burman was regarded as old by me. I found that the music of this movie was composed by someone called Khayyam. and that is how I became familiar with this name.

A few days back on the occasion of Amitabh and Rekha’s birthday I spoke of how famous or popular or well received their pairing was in Bollywood movies. There were other such equally popular jodis. Viz. Rishi Kapoor- Neetu Singh, Vinod Mehra- Moushmi Chaterjee, Rajesh Khanna with Sharmila Tagore, Rajesh Khanna with Mumtaz, Rajesh Khanna with Asha Parekh etc in my growing up years. Actually I thought that Jaya Bhaduri never made a geat pair on screen with Amitabh, I liked her more with Sanjeev Kumar or even Jeetendra. There were popular pairing in the previous generation of stars too. But I think we have more knowledgeable people in our group to list them. Now what made a pairing popular was how well they looked together or how had their movie fared at the box office or how much recall value their songs had.
