When I was a school kid then I found most, if not all subjects as boring. Even out of all these boring subjects, history took the cake. It was extremely difficult to remember the names of the kings, their eras, and what they did during their reign. And in case these kings happened to be born before the era of Christ then remembering their dates of birth and death was even more confusing. 🙂 Emperor Ashok, for instance was born in 304 BC and died in 232 BC. What kind of kings they were who died before they were born, was the doubt in the minds of many students of tender years.

It is such a frustrating exercise to get information on a poet-lyricist whom I admire for his light romantic and neo-devotional lyrics of Hindi non-filmy songs. Yes, many connoisseurs of Hindi NFSs may have correctly guessed him as Madhukar Rajasthani. I got familiar with his name only because of Vividh Bharati. It is surprising that not much information about him is available on the internet or in any other published materials. There was a time when at least one of the songs written by him used to be played in an early morning programme of devotional songs or in the afternoon programme of sugam sangeet (light semi-classical songs).

If one browses through the Hindi films made in the 1940s, it will be observed that there were many lesser known music directors who had tried their luck in Hindi films. My guess is that the number of such lesser known music directors in the 1940s may be a close to 50. Sadly, most of these talented music directors could not sustain their careers for long in the Hindi film industry. This blog has covered songs of many of lesser known music directors of the 40s such as Neenu Majumdar, Shanti Kumar Desai, Shyambabu Pathak, Madhulal Damodar Master, Ramchandra Pal etc. V Balsara was one among such music directors who started his career in Hindi films but could not sustain it for long as a music director. But he changed the track of his career and became a famous instrumentalist, orchestra conductor, a music teacher and the music director of non-filmy songs and a few Bengali films during rest of his life. I became aware of his name in the 1970s mainly for his beautiful compositions of some non-filmy Hindi songs.

Khayyam is one of the music directors of Hindi film industry who made a significant contribution in propagating the NFSs. By his own admission, he had started declining most of the offers for Hindi films’ music direction during late 50s and early 60s as he did not feel comfortable in working in such films in which interference of producers and distributors in music direction had become the order of the day. It was during this period that he devoted his time and energy in composing some of the finest NFSs especially with Talat Mehmood and Mohammed Rafi.

There have been many an artist from the Hindi cinema, that have become enduring icons in the cultural history of our country. And there are many a great artists with wonderful qualities to create and render in films and film music. Majority of those whom we remember, are not with us anymore in this physical world. And we think of them, remember them, and feel blessed that we have had the good fortune to be born in this time and in this place, where this wonder that we call the Hindi film music ruled, and still rules, the hearts of millions. The sounds and songs of the yesteryear still abound in the memory of music lovers. That memory is a great treasure, and a heritage of lasting presence.

And so, yesterday as I was conversing back and forth with Harish ji Raghuvanshi (resident of Surat, compiler of the ‘Mukesh Geet Kosh’) regarding information on the lyricist SH Behari, we started to discuss the general topic of hugely talented lyricists that spent a very small time in the industry, contributed a small number of very wonderful songs and then somehow did not work anymore for Hindi films. Their filmi careers are lost under obscurity.

Aaja mere meet re sunke mere geet re

The initial line of this song may make people think of the title song from “Geet” (1970) which has similar words, and indeed one will come across that song on google search with these lyrics, but the song under discussion is an entirely different song and this song was created five years earlier than “Geet” (1970).
