Singer Mukesh, who had become a playback singer by early 1950s was trying to make it big as an actor-singer a la K L Saigal in 1950s. So much so that he began to produce his own movies in which he acted as hero and sang his own songs. But his ventures into movie making ended up in disaster as he not only lost money and ended up on the verge of bankruptcy, his career as a playback singer too almost came to an end because he stopped getting singing assignments from outside movies.

“Pehchaan” (1970) is a movie starring Manoj Kumar and Babita in it. the movie itself is not remembered much now, but its songs are still popular. I have already discussed one song from this movie (Wo pari kahan se laaun ).

Mukesh was brought to Bombay (now Mumbai) in late 1930s by Motilal (a distant relative) who had seen him singing a song at Motilal’s sister’s wedding. While at Bombay, Mukesh got the opportunity to act and sing in a movie called “Nirdosh” (1941). This movie also had Nalini Jaiwant.It is interesting to note that Mukesh first acted in movies in 1940s, whereas his grandson (Neil Nitin Mukesh) is acting in movies more than six decades later. By now, most music lovers who are a regular of this blog must have come to the same conclusion about Chitragupta as I have concluded- that he was a grossly underrated and underutilised music director. Most of his music was given in B movies which did not catch the attention of mainstream movie goers. But what music these movies had !

“Johar Mehmood in Goa” (1965), as the title suggests, is a movie starring I S Johar and Mehmood. The two go to Goa in a bid to liberate it. Yes, Goa was still under Portuguese occupation till 1961 while the rest of India had got independence in 1947 itself. It was in 1961, when it finally became a part of India.

The technology of recording Hindi movie songs in the earlier decades was not very advanced. It was not possible to use the same recording for both the movie as well as the record companies, so the same song was recorded twice- once for the movie sound track, and another time for the record company.

I think I will not be entirely wrong if I say that one of the reasons songs appeal to all of us is not just because of the song itself. This may be true for a large majority of songs but I am sure each one of us has his or her own bouquet of songs that are special mainly of memories these songs represent.
