Today, February 21st 2017 is the 26th Remembrance Day ( I, feel it is better to call it Remembrance Day than calling it death anniversary) of Nutan, one of my favourite actresses. The first film of her which I saw in a theatre was ‘Milan’ in 1967. Thereafter, I had watched her black & white films when they were telecast on Doordarshan sometime in the early 80s. I am sure, many readers would agree with me that Nutan, through her intense acting, made us to ponder over the some of the social issues raised in films like ‘Seema’ (1955), ‘Sujaata’ (1959), Bandini’ (1963), ‘Saraswatichandra’ (1968) etc.

Hullo to all in Atuldom
So now we are all busy discussing the pros and cons of the demonetisation on our WhatsApp group. We are also having a fair number of jokes on the subject. But as our dear thandapani mentioned last week when our PM dropped the demonetisation bomb (as I like to call it) I have also decided to wait and watch for the rush at the banks and cash ATMs. At such a time a few songs ran through my mind. Let us have one of them today.

Hullo to all atulwaasis
A few days back our NAHMJI sent a mail on our email chain about a song she was looking for. As is our normal practice she had looked up for it first on our blog (I presume as that is also my method). Then she put out a look out notice for our diggaz to help her and the most unthinkable happened. Our guruji actually put up his hand to say he was sorry he could not help. But one thing is certain in atuldom, someone or other will come up to answer the question. This time it was Sadanandji. Kamathsaab thank you.

The 1960 film ‘Chhabeeli’ is not well remembered or talked about much. It was planned as the launch vehicle for Tanuja, by her mother Shobhna Samarth. Whatever else may have been the performance and success factors of the film otherwise, there is one aspect that is unique and significant about this film. Which also makes one wonder about the peculiarities of the cinema world, and its stereotyping. The film has a very delightfully mesmerizing song – “Ae Mere Hamsafar, Rok Apni Nazar” , which is sung by Nutan herself under the music direction of Snehal Bhatkar. This song, along with another equally mesmerizing duet of Nutan and Hemant Kumar – “Lehron Pe Lehar, Ulfat Hai Jawaan” , make this film and its music worth remembering. Both the music director and the lyricist, a gentleman by the name S Ratan, have excelled in this creating these two songs. And the rendering of these songs by Nutan – ah, that is just a class by itself.
