When I look at the star cast of “Bandi” (1957), I notice that it had all the Ganguly brothers viz Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar and Kishore Kumar in it and the three leading ladies in this movies were Bina Rai, Shyama and Nanda. That way this movie must have been like “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi”. I wonder what happened to “Bandi” at the box office. With this kind of star cast, the movie certainly promised so much.

“Insaaniyat”(1955) was a movie that had both Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand in it for the first and last time. This mega movie of 1955 also had wonderful music by C Ramchandra.

If Nargis was “Mother India”, then who was “Miss India” ? Few people may be aware of it, but both these movies were released in the same year viz 1957. “Mother India” went on to become a timeless classic, whereas “Miss India” was forgotten. And interestingly, Nargis herself was in the lead role of “Miss India” too.

“Miss Mary” (1957) is a movie that I like a lot. It has Gemini Ganeshan (Rekha’s father), Meena Kumari, Kishore Kumar etc in lead roles and it is a nice, heartwarming movie.

Telephones may be ubiquitous and affordable these days, but they were regarded as a luxury item in India till just two decades back. Getting a telephone connection took as long as getting a ration card or a gas connection in India of yesteryears.
