Atul Song-A-Day 15K Song Milestone Celebrations – 1
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Hullo to Atuldom.

Let me wish all a very Happy New Year.

No, my post is not late by three and half months, it is just that India is a country which follows a calendar called Shak Samvat which the Hindus follow and Hijri which the Muslims follow. The new year by the Hijri calendar starts sometime in September but as far as the Hindu Calendar is concerned every region seems to have a different time of the year when the new year starts. And each region has a name for its New Year’s Day – Gudi Padva (Samsaar Padvo in Konkani), Ugadi, Poila Baishak (in East Indian States), Bighu (Bikhu in Uttarakhand), Bishuva Sankranti, Cheti Chand, Vishu or Chitra Vishu (in Kerala and Tamil Nadu), I am sure I am missing a few names in this list – what do I do, we have a vast country. But the common thread here is most of the above are in March – April of the Gregorian calendar (only in some parts new Year is during Diwali and southern part of Kerala has its new year at Onam). In Punjab it is Baishakhi, celebrated on the Mesha Sankraanti which occurs today for this year (generally it is 13th April). So now that explains why I wished Happy New Year.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Same dates, last month, was a period of hectic activity. I believe pre-wedding period is the time when no one should check their BP. 🙂 I am often asked these days how does it feel after all the activity? Have you relaxed enough? Have you come to terms with the fact that your daughter is now married?

Phew!!! So many questions. Thinking of the last question- I don’t feel the difference; possibly because my daughter was already living away from home, due to her work, for almost 4 years now. She herself might answer like me. And to top it there is no custom of a “BIDAAI” in South Indian marriages, what we do is accompany the girl to her sasural and help her set-up home if she needs help in setting up. Also, in these modern ages when we are connected on an hourly basis through the various communication channels at our disposal, the feeling of the “daughter having got married” will never sink-in. The only complaint, well not exactly a complaint, is that after preparing for almost 4-5 months for the big day, it has come and gone and it is almost a month to the date.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Recently I read an interview of one of my favorite lyricist in the Bangalore Times which was conducted on the sidelines of Bangalore Poetry festival 2017. Every time I read or hear him I start admiring him all the more. Last year on the occasion of his birthday I heard him on Gaana.com (an app supporting continuous song playback) and I was floored by his thought process. There he had said “I don’t like to say things like ‘Hamaare zamaane mein ye hua karta tha. . .’. One shouldn’t lament about the fact that the current generation isn’t repeating what they did. At least they aren’t repeating your mistakes in the process.”  He further went on to say “what do people mean hamaara zamaana, as long as you are living it is your ZAMAANA”. That is a nice way to look at life.

The city of Calcutta–1962. A city so vibrant, so alive, so stylish, it was referred to as “The Paris of the East”. This exotic backdrop serves as the perfect locale for the tender, immortal love story about to unfold.

Hullo to all Atulwaasis’

Today(8 february 2017) is the first death anniversary of Nida Fazli. I realised it when radio Ceylon played songs penned by him this morning. I must admit here that I didn’t know that he had passed away last year of a massive heart attack. Another thing I should admit was that I never knew that he was that old a poet.

Its been about a month since I last sent any write-up to Atul. (I remember the last thing I did was send the lyrics of a song to Atul and Sudhirji for Sanjeev Kumar death anniversary). Not that I was short of ideas. It is just that various factors contributed to keeping me away from the blog. I have more than a month’s posts to catch up with. First it was diwali. Then my dearest niece’s engagement which took me to Chennai for a weekend. (Actually I had thought I will be able to call up our YYIIPPEEEE!!!! master when I was in his land but that also didn’t materialize. Sorry YYIIPPEEEE!!!! Master)

Atul Song-A-Day 10K Song Milestone Celebrations – 7
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

It is an honor to participate in the celebrations of reaching a great milestone on Atul’s blog. As we know we are close to completing the 10000th post. I am quite sure this concept of posting songs as a collaboration is quite unique to this blog. Unique or not, I like the feeling of being with a family of people who share such similar tastes in music and trivia about music. Congratulations to all of us for this important landmark.

What makes a song beautiful? Is it its lyrics, its music, the instrumentation or the vocal quality? The best songs have all four in common, but some songs that we like can be for even one of the above reasons. A lot of people like to proclaim that the current set of songs do not have the same quality as older songs. I do not even know when the time period for new songs does begin and which songs get classified as old.

The purists among music lovers often like to keep a cut-off for their listening habits. ‘I don’t listen to songs later than this year,’ they often say. I don’t disagree with those cut-offs. There are times when we just don’t want to listen to the cacophony that our music often descends to. But then, like a proverbial ‘keechad me kamal’ a beautiful song pops up among all this noise. The sufiana songs from the present times are meaningful and pleasing to the ear. The songs written by Gulzar and Javed Akhtar, set to tunes by AR Rahman are beautiful and worth listening to again and again.
