During my ‘crazy’ days of collecting 78 RPM gramophone records of rare gems of old Hindi films songs, I realised that there were many old Hindi films of early 50s whose gramophone records in 78 RPM format were not available at all. Some of the songs of such films were “sajaan ki ot leke” (Zevaraat, 1949), “yaad aane waale kyon yaad aa rahe hain” (Anmol Ratan, 1950), “preetam meri duniyaa mein do din to rahe hote” (Adaa, 1951), “baandh preeti phool dor” (Malti Madhav, 1951), “main saagar ki mast lahar” (Dhuaan, 1953), “bhool jaa sapne suhaane bhool jaa” (Rajdhani, 1956) etc. I had spent long hours in some of the prominent record shops in Mumbai for buying gramophone records of these and other rare songs but did not succeed at all. Those days, EPs/LPs records had made their presence in the records shops and these were displayed on the front side of the shops while 78 RPM records were relegated to the far end of the shops. In some shops, 78 RPM records were stored in ante-rooms full of dust.

Remembering Talat Mehmood (24 february 1924- 9 may 1998) on the anniversary of his birth today(24 february 2013).

The soft velvety voice that has lent itself to a wonderful array of musical creations, and made an indelible mark in the annals of Hindi film and non-film music. Whether the song is of happiness or it is of sadness, the first thing that comes to mind on hearing Talat Sb’s voice begin to sing, is a feeling of utmost comfort. A feeling that releases all other compulsions in the mind, and the mind wants to sit back and relax and just listen to this soft sound serenading the matters of heart.

My younger days were made more enjoyable by Talat’s songs. Though I was born and brought up in Hyderabad state- a Muslim ruled state(The Nizam was the king ruling on 85 % Hindu population….exactly opposite of Raja Harisingh of Kashmir ruling on 85% Muslims ! ), initially I was not much interested in Urdu Gazals etc. My interest in Urdu Gazals was ignited and further nurtured by by the way Talat sang them.

Recently, I came across a non-filmy song on the internet, sung by Talat Mehmood which happened to be his first disc cut in 1941 for HMV. The mukhda of the song was

sab din ek samaan nahin thha
ban jaaunga kyaa se kyaa main
iskaa to kuchh dhyaan nahin thha
