‘Begaanaa’ is a 1963 production from the banner of Sadashiv Chitra, produced and directed by Sadashi J Rao ‘Kavi’. The main star cast includes Dharmendra, Supriya Choudhry, Shailesh Kumar, Madhavi, Manorama, Tarun Bose, Chandrima Bhaduri, Badri Prasad, Rajan Haksar, Babloo, Agha. This is one of the earlier films of Dharmendra who had made his debut with Arjun Hingirani’s film ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere’ in 1960.

Achala Sachdev (born 3 may 1920- died 30 april 2012) died yesterday. She was 91 and she was three days short of completing 92 years. She started her film career at a young age, as a child actor in fact, but it is as a filmy mother that she is remembered the most.

O P Nayyar would not employ the voice of Lata Mangeshkar in his compositions, but no one found it ironic that Lata Mangeshkar’s younger sister became the mainstay of O P Nayyar compositions.

“Holiday in Bombay” (1963) is a movie which is barely known to most Hindi movie enthusiasts today. Same is the case for the music of this movie. But when one begins to look at the songs of this movie, one is left amazed. How can a movie full of such songs be so obscure. This movie should be known among music lovers at least for its songs if for nothing else.

Hindi movies has one genre of song that I call Villain’s den song. In this song, hero or his accomplices enter villain’s hideout in disguise while singing a song. Another genre of song related to villain’s den song is “diversion” song. In this a female accomplices sings and dances and the villains minnows are easily lured by her, and that allows other accomplices of the hero to gain access to villain’s hideout.

If some of the children’s songs in Hindi films are of any indication, we get an impression that children of our country grow up quite early in terms of their maturity and actions. Some of such songs are addressed to the parents, elders and even to God. Of course, this is but one of the cinematic liberties which those associated with making films is entitled to. However, I now find that most of the children in the internet age are indeed far ahead in terms of maturity and thinking than the children of our younger days. So kudos to our Hindi film fraternity for being ahead of time in this regard!

Between 1950s to 1970s, there was a series of British movies whose titles began with “Carry on..” . These movies were low budget comedy movies, whose comedy consisted of parody, farce, slapstick and double entendre, as wikipedia puts it. In India, I S Johar took a leaf out of this “Carry On” series movies, and he produced a few such movies whose titles began with “Johar in..”.

“Chhoti Bahu” (1971) is a movie which was produced by Seeroo Daryani and Darius Gotia.K B Tilak was the director. The movie had Rajesh Khanna,Sharmila Tagore Nirupa Roy, Shashikala, I. S. Johar, Madhumati, Jayshree T., Master Suraj, Mehmood Junior, Tarun Bose, Shivraj, Jairaj, Master Ratan, Radhika Rani, Irshad Panjatan, Chandrima Bhaduri etc in it.
