What does one do when one wants to sleep but the sleep would not come ? Count sheep ? That does not work with kids. Ask them to finish their home work? It may work, but long term outcome may lead to more sleeplessness. And what about small kids, who have not yet begun going to school, or who in fact have yet to even talk ?
Small kids who can understand talk can be told bedtime stories, but the smallest kids know only one way to go to sleep- viz lori. If moms are into Bollywood music, then they have quite a few immortal lories to choose from.

Rajesh Khanna had acted opposite many actresses right from seniors like Asha Parekh and Sharmila Tagore to his contemporaries like Hema Malini and Rekha as well as juniors like Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil. There are many Bollywood stars who have acted opposite their wives before marrying them. Rajesh Khanna did not acted against Dimple, but he did something rare. He is perhaps the only leading actor who has acted against his sister in law in a movie.

As a kid in one’s early teens, I was not much into liking a song by its “class”. I was purely a member of the “masses” in 1970s. Still, this song, which now I realise is a “classy” song, was a big favourite of mine. No idea why, perhaps it was the catchy tune that made me fall in love with this song.
Not just me, even my younger brother loved this song, but he disagreed with me about the lyrics. I tried to convince him unsuccessfully that the line was “anhoni path me kaante lakh bichaaye”, where as he was firm in his conviction that it was not “path mein kaante” but ” patle kaante”.

This song is from circa 1970s, picturised on Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore on a hill station. Do you say “mausam” ? Think again.
This song is from a movie that was released one year prior to “mausam”. Lata Mangeshkar is indeed the female singer, but the male singer here is Kishore Kumar, and the music director is R D Burman. For the record, R D Burman could do no wrong in those days. But the same could not be said about the makers of the movies in which he gave music.

“Woh kaun thi” (1964) must rank as one of the best suspense movies made in Bollywood, and this song is arguably one of the best suspense songs in this movie as well as in the history of Bollywood movie music.
Here is one Lata song where she for a change does not sound high pitched or shrill ( as has been the case in a few of her songs). Raja Mehdi Ali Khan has written this song that captures the atmosphere so admirably well. Madan Mohan has created a masterpiece that was appreciated by masses and classes alike. This song was 9th in Binaca geetmala final of 1964.

It is one of the most moving songs of all time. It was the first sad song that I became aware of as a very young child. I witnessed a real life situation in which two brothers had a fight. A few days later, the younger brother left the home forever, never to return. He had left a note informing his elder brother about his decision. The note also contained words of this song- “chal ud ja re panchi ke ab ye desh hua began..” Whenever I hear this song, I am reminded of that real life incident.

It is one of the immortal ghazals of Bollywood. When one of the biggest music directors of that time, Naushad, heard the ghazals of Anpadh ( other ghazal being ” hai isi mein pyar ki aabroo”), he found out who the composer was, and then phoned Madan Mohan and took an appointment with him. When Naushad met Madan Mohan, Naushad said that these two ghazals by Madan Mohan were equal to all the compositions that he ( Naushad) had ever created.

It is a joyous song that would cheer everyone up. How joyfully Rafi has sung this song ! We have seen some joyful Rafi songs in the past. This song is different from them all.
It is mind boggling to realise that there could be so many shades of joys, and that one could express one’s joy in so many different ways. The same lyricist has written songs of joy, but he does ot repeat his ideas from other songs of similar nature. It is amazing to realise that the same lyricst could come up with so many different songs for seemingly similar situations and make them look different.

Boat songs, where the singer sings about maajhi(boatman) and the boat were the speciality of S D Burman as a singer and music director. But here, his son R D Burman has created music that his father must have been proud of .
And the voice of Kishore Kumar is nothing short of magical. It has been chronicled that the people present at the time of recording of this song were so much moved by Kishore Kumar’s singing that they cried. Kishore Kumar’s voice full of pain and pathos had that effect on them.
