Haal kyaa hai dilon ka…aapka muskurana ghazab dhaa gaya

I was under the impression that Kishore Kumar, who sang almost all varieties of songs, never sang a qawwaali, and that the closest to a qawwali that he sang was “kabhi bekhudi ne maara” from “alag alag”. Now I stand corrected. Kishore Kumar did sing at least one proper qawwaali and it was in a 1973 movie called ” Anokhi Ada”. And it was quite a popular qawwali too. I wonder how this fact had slipped from my mind.
This movie was a Vinod Khanna starrer. For those who came in late, Vinod Khanna ( and also Shatrughan Sinha) were A category villains in Bollywood in early 1970s, and they in fact used to get cheered more than the heroes in their movies. But in their infinite wisdom, both of them decided to become heroes. Their “reformation” began mid 1970s, and both ended up as middle of the road heroes. Vinod Khanna could have challenged Amitabh Bachchan for the position of the top Bollywood hero, but he got distracted and went into the ashram of Rajneesh when Bollywood super stardom beckoned him. So, it was a case of missed opportunity for Vinod Khanna.
Coming to this movie called “Anokhi Ada”, I have little idea what is there in the movie. As far as I am concerned, the only thing I know about this movie is that it had Vinod Khanna in it, and secondly, this song ” haal kya hai dilon ka” is from this movie.
Of course, watching this movie, I see that this qawwali was picturised on Jeetendra, which means that Vinod Khanna was still a villain in those days. Good !

aap kaa muskuraanaa Ghazab dhaa gayaa
haal kyaa hai dilon kaa na poochho sanam
aap kaa muskuraanaa Ghazab dhaa gayaa
ik to mahafil tumhaari haseen kam na thi
ik to mahafil tumhaari haseen kam na thi
us pe meraa taraanaa ghazab dhaa gayaa
ik to mahafil tumhaari haseen kam na thi
us pe meraa taraanaa ghazab dhaa gayaa
haal kyaa hai dilon kaa na poochho sanam
ab to lahraayaa masti bhari chhaanv mein
ab to lahraayaa masti bhari chhaanv mein
baandh do chaahe ghunghroo mere paanv mein
baandh do chaahe ghunghroo mere paanv mein
main bahaktaa nahin thaa magar kyaa karoon
main bahaktaa nahin thaa magar kyaa karoon
aaj mausam suhaanaa Ghazab Dhaa gayaa
main bahaktaa nahin thaa magar kyaa karoon
aaj mausam suhaanaa Ghazab Dhaa gayaa
haal kyaa hai dilon kaa na poochho sanam
har nazar uth rahi hai tumhaari taraf
har nazar uth rahi hai
nazar uth rahi hai
har nazar uth rahi hai tumhaari taraf
aur tumhaari nazar hai hamaari taraf
aur tumhaari nazar hai hamaari taraf
aankh uthaanaa tumhaaraa to phir theek thaa
aankh uthaanaa tumhaaraa to phir theek thaa
aankh uthaakar, jhukaanaa Ghazab Dhaa gayaa
aankh uthaanaa tumhaaraa to phir theek thaa
aankh uthaakar, jhukaanaa Ghazab Dhaa gayaa
haal kyaa hai dilon kaa na poochho sanam
mast aankhon kaa jaadoo jo shaamil huaa
mast aankhon kaa jaadoo
mast aankhon kaa jaadoo
mast aankhon kaa
mast aankhon kaa jaadoo jo shaamil huaa
meraa gaanaa bhi sunne ke qaabil huaa
meraa gaanaa bhi sunne ke qaabil huaa
jisko dekho wahi aaj behosh hai
jisko dekho wahi aaj behosh hai
aaj to main deewaanaa Ghazab Dhaa gayaa
jisko dekho wahi aaj behosh hai
aaj to main deewaanaa Ghazab Dhaa gayaa
ik to mahfil tumhaarii haseen kam na thi
us pe meraa taraanaa ghazab dhaa gayaa
haal kyaa hai dilon kaa na poochho sanam

There was one more Qawaali sung by Kishore Kumar from the film Phool Khile hai Gulshan Gulshan and the song name is Kaisa Parda hai… Jalwa Jalwa hai… and it is picturized on Rishi Kapoor. Also the song Darbar Mein Upar wale ke from the film Do aur Do paanch also comes under the category of Qawwali only.

Even “wa’ada tera wa’ada” in Dushman is in qawwali mode. There are many qawwali style songs by Kishore Kumar.
